I've been living here in Daejeon for around 1 year 3 months. It is a pretty nice place. The Korean food here generally sucks but it is a pretty nice city. That being said don't accept everything I write as the gospel. I work three different jobs so my exploring has been pretty limited.
I don't go out much but I think you will find plenty to do in Eun-Heng Dong (the old downtown region near the main train station). Yu-Song or even in the new downtown area of Dun-Son.
If you miss good eats from home there are a few restaurants serving western food (Outback Steakhouse (2), Bennegins, TGIF, VIPS, ...) There are also several stores where western food is avaliable. I love my COSTCO membership.
There is not much of interest within the city itself but being centrally located you are pretty close to all major tourist areas of Korea. Seoul is just 40 minutes away by KTX and a trip to Busan will take just a couple of hours.
Daejeon's population is just over 1,500,000 people but as there is little heavy industry the city is relatively clean and pollution free. While there are much nicer places to be in Korea Daejeon seems to have an acceptable mix of good and bad to make it an alright place to live.
Welcome to Daejeon! |

there is plenty of stuff to do here bro, it just depends what you are into. if you like soccer, there is a local foriegn team here, delacuba.com i think, also a frisbee team, which meets on a sunday afternoon. (ill give details if you ask) the food is (korean) is just like everywhere else in the country, with plenty of restaurants to suit your taste. the western food is getting there, with all the usual franchise places the other poster said, with weiszenhouse (sp) doing a great buffet (17 bucks akk you can eat and drink (great german beer) on a week night!)
parks and mountains are a short taxi/bus ride away. bars are pretty good, with a solid foriegn community. santa clause bar, j-rock (if you like faggy music ) a new western owned bar called brick house, again if you want detail;s just ask.if you like koreans, there are plenty of them here too!
pm me and ill give you specifics anytime. |

I used to live in Daejeon and I found that it to be a very nice place. The "old" Daejeon, the area around Daejeon station, is a bit dirty and crowded. But the newer area around the city hall (Dunsan dong) is clean with wide streets and plenty of parks. The area also has a jogging/bike path all around so it's a great place to go for jogs or a bike ride. That's the area where most foreigners lives since most of the hagwons are located there. Of course, the air quality is so much nicer than Seoul.
The subway line is scheduled to open in March which should make it that much more convenient.
I would say that the overal cost of living is about 20-30% cheaper than Seoul.
Given its size, it doesn't have as much to offer as far as international cuisine, nightlife, and enterainment as Seoul, but it's not bad. But there are plenty of nearby mountains if you're into hiking. The Geyrong-san is only 20 minute drive from Daejeon and has some great hiking trails. And KTX makes it really convenient to visit Seoul for the weekend or even a day trip.
I hope the information helps. Enjoy! |
