If you could make the same money for teaching English in other
countries, say Thailand, China, India, Philippines etc., how long
would you stay in Korea?

so basically if you could make the same amount of money in a country where that money is worth much more, would you do it?

Why not just ask
"Which is better, a punch in the nose or a strawberry ice-cream blow job?"

One of the posters on here made me LOL when he said, "The money isn't the point. If the women were ugly, I wouldn't be here."

If the women here were not as attractive as they are, and not as interested in "sampling" a forienger, I bet we would have a lot fewer male English teachers bothering to stay.

Sad to say, but many believe this country offers little other reason to stay, given rampant racism, weird cultural quirks, stinky Kimchi men on the subways, etc..

If my "take home" was the same back home, I would leave Korea in a heart beat. Not that Korea is all that bad, it just can't compare to Toronto.

Then there's the gf issue though. But she is all set to head to Canada. We just need some good start up capital.

And I would complete my contract, cuz it's the right thing to do.

(Until the end of my contract for sure.)

China for its higher levels of pollution and greasier food? not my bag.
India? Depends greatly on the area I'd be living, working, commuting.
Philippines? maybe, but not in Manila.
Thailand? I'd do six months on the coast or in the mountains, but a year of 30+ C heat and humidity? probably not.

That said, I'd be tempted just for travelling's sake. There's a couple of cities in Indonesia that've caught my eye. Ideally I'd work three to six months in those sort of countries, max. Some days I think it's a very real possibility for me.

But after reading what ESLers put up with in many third-world countries (on Dave's main boards of various countries) I feel like I've got it pretty good here. I live near beaches on an island with over six months of very warm weather, and pleasantly cool winters without any snow (yet I can hit Muju ski resort by noon on Saturday).

Today the sun is shining, I've had a yummy spicy Korean lunch, and am enjoying my classes of Korean youth.

Tomorrow I might be tempted to live in another Asian country.

The future is open...

If my take-home were the same and it were as easy to land a job I'd probably go somewhere in Europe in a few years. It's not just the money - it's how easy it is to land a job that would require months or years of useless courses and barriers of red tape (like Canada).

No notice nada...I would just pack my bags and be out the door like a shot.

Choices? Hmmmmmm....New Zealand(always wanted to go), Thailand, Fiji, Hawaii, Europe and maybe Brazil.

I would if I could...but I can't..so I won't.

Wouldn't be here except for the family and can make more money elsewhere...but I don't mind because as others have said the living is easy in Korea. Not many places where a person can get 5 1/2 months holiday a year...

If I could make this amount of money (even relatively speaking) for the same number of hours/week in a South American or African, I'd probably head down there, just for a new cultural experience.
I dig Korea, but there are more horizons to explore. I would probably choose Korea over another Asian country though (with the exception of India-- just for the beaches and the food). It's friendly to religious people (unlike China) and it's quite developed and clean (compared to Vietnam.) The language is easy to learn (unlike China or Thailand) and the streets are safe.
And if you offered me free rent and heaps of spending money back home in Canada, I might not spit in your face either.

I'm still enjoying Korea. I'll be staying for a few years.

After Korea, I'd like to live in a French-speaking area of Switzerland. Money will be an issue, I think.

Good question.

Considering my family situation and links to the local community, I don't think elswhere would be better for me.

We might relocate eventually (when our son is a bit older) as my second job will allow me to work most anywhere.

As Korea not comparing to Toronto....I agree...Korea wins hands down..TO is a gaping hole of crap...(and I was born there) Laughing
