Just finished teaching an intensive course a Xian school which will remain unnamed for the time being. The particular classes I taught were conversational in nature, but the students were exposed to other disciplines, such as writing, reading, pronounciation, listening, and so on. Some conventional wisdom gleaned from my students: (Note:The following opinions are from my students, not me)

"Japanese are monkeys."
"Chinese are monkeys."
"ESL teachers are rapists."
"US soldiers are rapists"
"US soldiers brought prostitution to Korea"
"Foreigners marrying Korean women is bad for Korean genes."
"It's OK for Korean men to marry foreign women as long as the women look Korean"
"Pakistanis are dirty 'sh*t' people.'
"Jews are bad because they rejected Jesus."
"Korea invented hip-hop"
"Korea invented 'Hip-hop-dan-suh'"
"Dr. Hwang is innocent."
"The Americans are framing Dr. Hwang to steal his research."
"The Americans will cheat in the next World Cup to ensure Korea doesn't win and embarass them like last time."
"Referees in World Cup 2002 were bribed by the USA and Japan to make decisions against Korea."
"Korea will soon unite and reclaim Japan and Northern China."
"Foreigners are responsible for most of Korea's crime."

There were more, but I didn't start writing them down until the second week of class.

You mission should you choose to accept it:

Guess the age of my students!! Maybe you'll be surprised, more than likely, you won't be. Confused

(I am not trolling, nor am I looking at debating ANY of the comments listed above. After 5 years in Korea, I can't say I'm surprised at what I have heard. What I am surprised at was the amount of comments like this in a short 4 week class. I guess it was an intensive course for me as well.)

I don't belive a single thing that you have written here. All the cliches we hear about xenophobic Koreans, all in one class?

Bullshit.

Wow, your students are very articulate Shocked mine say stuff like Korea good Japan bad etc.

A gem fell out of the blue the other day.. "teacher, are you gay?" (from an 11 year old). Shocked Shocked Laughing Exclamation Exclamation

They demanded proof i wasn't and I had to show them some pics of my last g/f on my handpone then.

But how does a kid who can hardly string two words together otherwise, suddenly ask a bizarre question in perfect english?

The recurrent theme throughout the statements made by your students seems to be that of a rampant Korean jingoism. I guess you would be suspicious and hateful too if you were someone's bitch for the last hundred years. Remember, prejudice starts in the home, kids!

Not surprised. They are probably 13 Korean, 12 Western age. They are spoonfed this stuff from birth. But what would be surprising is if all of them said these things. Most likely it is one or two ring leaders and a few sheep following their lead.

Wouldn't it have occured them that saying this to an ESL TEACHER would be offensive?

My guess is they have the mentality of <=12 years old and have yet to discover the world that exists outside of themselves (although they could obviously be much older but very immature).

The stuff I bolded is exactly the case, as far as I'm concerned. Especially the part about a few vocal students and everyone nodding in agreement.
However, the age part is off by about 12-14 years.

So what was your reaction? What did you do (assuming that this outlandish tale is true)?

My first reaction was "Why are Chinese students saying that Chinese people are monkeys?" My second was "Why is this person posting on a Korean board if he's in the Chinese city of Xian?" My third was: "Yeah, yeah."

Guess who believe things like this:

"The world is 6000 years old."
"God created dinosaur fossils to test our faith."

This thread is a troll.

Someone pointed it our that the OP pretty much wrote down every stereotype we have about Korean students. Its too far fetched to believe that in one class, within the span of a few weeks, all of this has been said.

I used to think ignorance stayed within the bounds of reason. But korean has proven me wrong.

What if the topic was "Korea" or "How great is Korea?".

I'll tell you one thing, it is offensive to me as an xtian that fellow xtians would peddle this ^^^king bulls#!t on their kids.
