Based on the Ontario and Quebec results, if the Tories end up governing well, next election they could win a majority. Looks like voters are finally ready to see what the Tories can do. And I wouldn't make any bets on Harper pushing deeply unpopular policies either. Not with a minority government. Even if he did have a hidden agenda (he doesn't) he'd be foolish to try and implement it first term.

Not sure what to think about the Green Party. They went up a tiny bit and have an extra $100,000+ a year in funding from last time. Yawn.

One more good thing for the Green Party - the guy who challenged Jim Harris for leadership after the 2004 election (and the only serious contender) decided to turn Liberal afterwards and ran somewhere in Ontario. Turns out he got his ass whipped by a huge margin; the Conservative candidate there won with over 50% of all the votes. Changing party leaders is bad when a party is just starting to get known so keeping Jim Harris would be their best bet.

It will be interesting for sure to watch this new government. It would be a bad day in Canada if they put a party that has admitted to corruption back into power. Harper will play it cool, get the main popular policies out first that shouldn't take too much of an effort to pass through Parliament eg The Accountablility Act. After that, well it's up to him to figure out the needs. I'm just curious as to who will lead the liberals.

I can't see Harper's popularity going anywhere but up for the first while. The first thing he plans to do is to pass that bill to fight corruption, after which he plans to lower the GST by a percentage. I think the one after that is the credit for families with young children which might stir up debate on whether the government should be taking care of people or whether they should have the money themselves, but there's nothing scary there. The other two priorities I've forgotten but they weren't scary either. I don't see any other parties opposing them either because there's nothing controversial there and nobody wants another election.

Harper will definitely be taking a tougher stance with the US in regards to softwood lumber. I think all Canada will have to concede is 1. 1 parallel. A nice and even 50th parallel between between Canada and the US. 50/50 split. What could be fairer? Probably not a lot of softwood lumber there anyways!
