We only started flying in 1900 and now we are exploring Mars with rovers and collecting stuff and bringing it back from space. Seriously, times are cool. I sort of wish I had been born about 15 years later than I was (though I am still under 30) as that generation is going to really see some cool stuff. Still, I'll probably live until 100 atleast
What predictions do you have about life in 20, 50, 100 years? |

Perhaps the title of the thread should be "engineering in the 21st century".
I think the bicycle will make a big comeback. Whole economies could be revitalized by throwing off the yoke of the self-perpetuating oil-automobile-superhighway model of transportation. I think in the future people will realize that free energy that makes them healthier is better than expensive, dangerous transportation systems that make them fat.
The bicycle has only ever been an amusement for the industrialized world. I think if it became a dominant form of transportation we'd see fantastic new infrastructure projects like covered, weatherproof roads, bridges, and bike tunnels, and the machines themselves would advance substantially. Imagine a city like Los Angeles, if cars were banned. Those huge, pervasive freeways would be heaven for eight million bikers to commute daily on, in that beautiful weather... and probably no slower than the current traffic jams. |

I'm actually kind of disappointed with how slow the space programs have proressed since we went to the moon. Maybe it is just that the science fiction movies have gone too far ahead. Our space station looks like a piece of junk. And the basic shuttle model remains the same. Bring on the cool space ships |

No, I wanted to leave it open enough so this thread doesn't die. Anything (even theories that are untestable at the moment) are pretty cool. |

I just hope the flying cars will come at once! I've been promised that since I'm a kid.
And the ground level should belong to bikes, Joe. That's true. |

Bikes more like the ones in Tron or Akira I hope, and not just your typical leg pumping, slow bike, or it would take far too long to get places by land.
But a cyclone from Robotech would be my number one choice. |
