is the country doomed to minority governments? no. the government before last was a majority, if i'm not mistaken. there've been minorities before, there will be majorities again. |
Exactly. Our political culture needs to change, and we need to stop automatically assuming a minority government is a dead-in-the-water government. |

The thing is that all minority governments collapsed before their terms could be served out. You just can't pass any major laws with out majority.
Conservatives are pushing for Property rights and the libs and NDPS is not in favour of it. I don't know about BQ..
The electoral system has to change. Canada might just end up being divided into when it comes to politics. West Conservative and East liberal.
Nothing will ever get done. |

Is Canada doomed?
I dunno. But I'm very unhappy about Stephen Harper cozying up to the likes of Bush and his ilk. And if Harper sticks his nose in far and deep enough, we'll probably make it onto the serious, for real list of countries to get attacked by Al Qaida.
As a Canadian, I liked not having to worry about that. |

It wasn't always that way, and doesn't have to be. This is what I mean by changing the political culture. That the ruling party doesn't automatically have carte blanche to do whatever it wants for 4 years should not be viewed as a bad thing.

Minority governments are not always short-lived. While they have not generally lasted four years, there have been minority governments in the time before 1979 that were fairly stable and able to pass legislation. |

Pearson never had a majority in the Canadian House of Commons, but he introduced important social programs (including universal health care, the Canada Pension Plan, and Canada Student Loans), and the Maple Leaf Flag. Pearson's government instituted many of the social programs that Canadians hold dear. |

It certainly makes Canada a less-desireable destination for those fed up with the US government! |

We have already made it on the list.
There was a thread on this last year, when OBL read out a list of countries that would be punished. Canada was one of them.
When we invaded Afghanistan we made it on the list. America is number 1 right now though. |

What? BC has finally slid into the Pacific? Or is it so far west, it's east? Granted the Tories got more seats than any other single party, but if you add the NDP and Grits together, they have more seats.
Nothing getting done is better than very bad things getting done, IMHO...though I'd like some very radical liberal things done. Am I showing my colours? |
