If Paul Martin is stepping down, who do you think will be the next Liberal leader? Who do you think would be a good Liberal leader? |

Some pundits are talking about the Harvard prof. from Ontario.. Who else is left? Goodale? he's the only senior guy left.. Landslide Annie is out the door.. Pettigrew is gone.. no other real big fish left of the old guard. You have the alcoholic Macallum or Brison are about the only two names left that the public would recognize.. Some other minor liberal ministers held onto their seats but they're not noteworthy enough to win a leadership bid. Interesting indeed.. see how it plays out. Maybe someone from the outside? but then they would have to wait for a byelection to come up to get him/her into the House.. |

I know you're going to think I'm crazy, but I'm pretty sure Belinda Stronach is eyeing the job. Why else do you think she jumped from the Conservative to Liberal party? She saw an opening coming up. She's a determined lady who wants power.
That being said, I'm not sure if the party is going to actually give her the power she wants. |

I think that is why Ignatieff is here, there was alot of pressure on him to make the transition from the hypothetics of politics to the reality of it, and with his being elected, I may really take more active interest in the day to day workings of the government.
In the Harvard Crimson:
Quote: |
Ignatieffs decision to take a position at his alma mater has also ignited speculation that he may be eyeing a run for the leadership of Canadas Liberal Party. In Canadian elections, the leader of the party that wins a majority in the House of Commons becomes the countrys prime minister.
David J. McNally, a professor and chair of York Universitys political science department in Toronto, said he believes that Ignatieffs homecoming is undoubtedly political in nature.
I think he really wants to see if he can capture a certain public imagination around the idea that he is a charismatic and intelligent candidate, said McNally, who is the author of an upcoming essay on Ignatieff and imperialism.
Ignatieffs office said he was unavailable for comment. But, in March, he told the Toronto Star that he had no intention of changing careers.
I have the best job in the world, and I cant see any foreseeable circumstance where I want to change. And thats the hand-on-heart truth, he told the newspaper.
However, in recent months, Ignatieffs frequent public appearances and bylined columns in Canadian newspapers have fueled suspicions that he may be testing the waters for a potential run. In March, Ignatieff delivered the keynote address at the Liberal Partys national-policy convention. He also met with top Liberal Party officials in Quebec and Nova Scotia in May, according to news reports.
In a certain sense, hes been rebuilding his Canadian profile, McNally said.
But if Ignatieff does decide to run for an elected office, experts say he will face significant obstacles. Chief among them is the fact that Ignatieff, a prominent intellectual and writer, has never held a political office. A recent poll by the Toronto Star found that only four percent of Canadians consider Ignatieff the leading possibility to replace the current prime minister, Paul Martin. |
Stronach came off to me as eyeing to job too, but during her interview, she just kept repeating a grocery list of objectives, like they were written on her hand or something.....she never even looked into the camera....very bimboish.... |

Stronach could be a possibility I never thought about her. I'm not sure if they would put her in power or not? Some people are now saying Frank McKenna the former premier of NB, current Ambassador to the US. Lots of names being thrown around. For those of you on here who are Liberals who do you want to be the next leader of your ill fated party? |

Oh my God, that hooer? Stronach? The very idea makes my stomach turn! She'd be worse than Mulroney. |

A bimbo? A whoore?
This is exactly the kind of mysoginistic attitude which makes it so difficult for a woman to make it to the top in politics.
Why don't you just go ahead and call her a dumb blond? Or maybe you should make some shallow comment about her physical appearance while you're at it.
Do you see these names being used to describe any male politician in Canada? Of course not. Because there is a double standard out there that still applies to women.
Why don't you sexist @ssholes just admit that you judge her negatively because of her gender? |

I don't know if it is her gender that makes people look at her negatively.
I don't think Stronach has much in the way of educational qualifications. It shows when she talks. She has really good advisers who tell her what to say but it's clear when you listen to her talk that she can't go much beyond that. Now there are a lot of politicians who are like that...but if you want to be the leader you have to be able to think on your feet somewhat.
Stronach does have the experience of being in charge of a big corporation. But would she have had that job if her dad hadn't owned the place? She's just another rich girl riding on daddy's coat tails is the way a lot of people see her.
Now if we're talking about star power...she's got it. She attracts attention. She's not hard on the eyes either. But is she the next leader of the Liberal party or a future prime minister? I doubt it. Look what happened to Stockwell Day...he had star power, but no substance. He was quickly sent to the sidelines when his party realized he was a political bafoon during an election campaign. |

Maybe, maybe not. But I'm challenging the connotations of the language that is used to describe her.
Inexperienced? Maybe.
But a whoore? A bimbo?
These are the words of sexism. |

I don't judge her on the basis of her gender, but it certainly sounds as if you do.
In a discussion here a few months back, I called her a 'hooer' because she traded in her party, her riding association (and arguably her boyfriend) in order to advance her career. A 'hooer' is someone who sells their butt for money, and there are male hooers as well as female ones.
Belinda Stronach claims she crossed the floor of the house because 'she was concerned about her country' and 'wanted to fight separatism'. However, she made getting a cabinet post a condition of joining the Liberals. If she wanted to do something good for her country, then why did she make getting a cabinet post a condition of changing parties? Why didn't she do it simply because it was a good thing/the right thing to do? Why did she need to profit personally from it?
Because she's a political hooer. Pure and simple.
Who says there are no male political hooers? Certainly not me. She would deserve just as much criticism (and the epithet) if she were a male.
You're the one practicing sexism here, not me. You assume she shouldn't be criticized for what she did because she's female. That's reverse sexism. And really stupid. Why should she get away with not being judged on her actions, simply because she's female?
Equality means treating people who are a different gender from you as your equal. And sometimes it means treating them as your equal whether they like it or not.
There are a lot of political hooers in the Liberal party, male and female. She's just the most obvious example.
And by the way...what do I care if she's blond, and where exactly did I call her a bimbo? |
