The interesting thing is that with the holographic hard drives coming out in the next year or two, Beaver will likely see his terabyte storage wishes come true.
We should be quad-core by then, too. |

Also, when/if I ever move back, I won't have to dismantle my system and attempt to get my precious components back without screwing them up. I also won't have to set everything back up in a new case once I get there... time wasted if you ask me. I much prefer to throw my system into a notebook backback and have everything up and running instantly, wherever I go. Remember, this is not a rough laptop anymore than it is a laptop meant for actually taking with you on business trips or vacations. It is a gaming laptop. |
People always say "I can take it with me", which is an advantage. But with what I do, a unit that I can take with me won't cut it. Try opening half of the MS Office suite, Premiere 1.5, Photoshop CS2, three or four internet things and using bittorrent and eDonkey. Worse, do it with just the one small screen.
I wouldn't mind owning a laptop, but it would always have supplemental status. |
Beaver you are really over exaturating. I run Maya and Combustion at the same time and have firefox open at the same time.. I have no problems. Might be slower then a desktop but not by much. |

XP Pro. Before the last install I was using XP pro 64 but I couldn't get another working copy and with Vista coming out this year I didn't want to buy a copy.
Other stuff:
2 gigs corsair ram.
two SATA drives
two PATA drives
two 19-inch LCD monitors |

I think a lot of people will finally dump the desktop for a dual-core laptop.
Wow. |
Have you seen the specs on the new Acer TravelMate? It's one of the first laptops to incorporate the core duos:
Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi
Core Duo T2500 2x 2.00GHz
2048MB (2x 1024MB)
120GB Hard Drive
DVD+/-RW (Dual Layer)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256MB max. 512MB shared memory
15.4" WSXGA+ TFT (1680x1050)
All this wrapped in a sexy carbon-fiber case and selling for $2400 CAD. Pretty solid deal imho.
Personally I'm waiting for this puppy to come out.
I think the concept of "desktop replacement" is finally becoming a reality. Laptops won't ever replace desktops completely but like you're seeing with land-lines and cellphones, I think you're going to see a lot of people abandoning their desktops for an all-in-one portable solution. |
