I am a recent graduate with a teaching degree and I also happen to be a Korean - American. I am new at this finding a job stuff but I have done quite a bit of research on it. I need some one to point me in the right direction here....recruiter or not? if not, how do i find a school that's reputable? is it even a reasonable thing to think that i will even find a job being a korean-american? someone, anyone...help me please! |

How long have you been looking for an ESL job? Sometimes it takes a few weeks. Chill! Don't come off desperate when you do talk with recruiters because you'll screw yourself. They can sense desperation and will try to place you in a less than desirable situation for the bounty. I posted my limited resume on, I believe, Hi teacher and got responses almost immediately. Email a few recruiters if you actually want to talk with someone quickly. My 1st email was to Park English and they called me the same day! Eventually I got my own job minus the middle man but just hold on!
BTW...the fact that you're ethnically Korean can unfortunately play against you in some jobs. They visualize blond and pale for the ideal teacher no matter if they can't chew gum and walk at the same time! |

If you are female, I think it's likely that hogwans will try to pay you less since most Korean women teachers get paid less than men, and hogwan directors are concerned that Korean students/parents won't take them seriously as native-English teachers. At a hogwan I worked at the director hired two young women teachers with comparable credentials, but the Korean-American was offered 1.7 million won while the Canadian got 2 million. I don't think that holds as true for public schools, though. However, the pay scale there is directly related to work experience and TEFL/TESOL certificates... There are definitely advantages as well as disadvantages to using recruitors. If you're interested in public school positions I think it helps to get a recruitor that mainly specializes in that ... |
