hips != butt
butt <> hips
They are DIFFERENT! I shouldn't have to explain.
Teach "butt" as it is short for the proper term "buttocks," and only mommies use the word "bum." |

The only thing I would say in front of my grandmother is "bottom." Maybe that is a Southern thing, though. |

Ditto, and that's the term I used in kindergarten/early elementary classes during circle time. ("Put your bottom on the mat. / Put your hands in your lap. / Put your bottom on the mat, on the mat.") "Buttocks" got introduced whenever we studied body parts, and "backside" has made rare appearances -- generally in the form of "Backside. Chair. NOW." -- when certain children are having particularly difficult days. |

I voted "arse/ass" just because it's so absurd that I couldn't resist. Who would actually teach that?
Actually, this has only come up once in any of my classes. My students referred to the posterior as "hips" and I corrected them by pointing out that hips are the bones on the side. They were rightly confused and demanded the truth, so I went with "butt". I thought about using bottom or backside, but both are inaccurate euphemisms that prolong arbitrary denial of the human condition. Butt acknowledges our derieres head on, does it not? |

In the US, I have been known to use "bottom" with young students, often slapping my own for reference. My second choice would be "rear". |

"Butt" is only commonly used in North America (and possibly Australia - I'm not sure).
In the UK noone really uses that term. Bum, backside and arse are all far more common depending on whether your talking to kids, your gran or your mates. |
