|
|
I finally went to a PC bang this weekend with a fellow teacher in Daejeon...we were hanging out in his office at the Uni there, and since he doesn't drink, we decided to just jump right in and see what they were all about. We got in, and started clicking on all the random icons on the desktops of the computer....we would get into a login page, and it would ask us for our registration number, as well as a password. He has been here for about 3 years over the past 6 years, and has been told that foreigners numbers dont' work on the gaming platforms, so we tried to hack our way in....via limewire, or google....
I know that for some games you have to pay for a game card ...i.e. Star wars galaxies, or World of Warcraft...yet I was told these gaming rooms are suppossed to eliminate the need for a monthly fee...
Could some other person that has been to the bangs fill me in on how I can play if I feel the urge again.. |

Easy. Just go to the person sitting at the desk up front. You will be given a card with a number on the back. Just ask him/her to show you what to do.
If you click on the internet icon, a window will come on with 2 blank spaces, type in your card number. THen click on the internet, and just type in www.yahoo.com, or what ever you use, and the site will come on in English.
No problem, some one will show you what to do..Brig ear plugs, its a noisy place. |

Are you looking for information for how to play games? (Like Starcraft, Worldcraft, Kart Rider.) Cuz I want to learn how to do that, too. But as you said, I think we have trouble doing it b/c our numbers don't work. I'd love some more information about this. (I wanna play Kart Rider.)
When I first came to Korea I didn't know how to say "How do I use this?" in Korean, but by going to the front counter and looking clueless, they'll take you over to the computer and show you how to do things. |

Whoa, whoa, whoa. This is what I think your asking: how do you fill in the page to register to play what ever game, or to pay 1000W per hour, and not 1500W as it is with the card. In order to fill in the form, if you are hopeless with hangeul, you need a K-friend to show you, otherwise, if you can make it out, or ask the frindly neighbourhood PCbang guy to give you a hand, just fill in made up address' and a fake Korean name and number. To get a fake number, ask some one to see theirs on what ever pretext. Your foreign id card starts with a 3 or a 5, Koreans start with the opposite, I think Korean numbers are birth days too, I did all this last year, but then couldn't be bothered remembering and just payed the extra 50 cents an hour, lazy and weak I know. The computer doesn't know every Korean's name address, etc etc, you just need to fill the form in with valid material, in particular, the id number must start with a 3 or a 5 and be a possible birth date, the address field needs a possible address, the name must be in hanguel, etc. Hope this helps, I suggest asking the PC bang guy if he or she is young, as they won't mind helping you wth such a minor fraud. Have fun, spend those extra 500Ws on something good! |

It's quite possibly the easiest thing you can do in Korea. Go in. Get card. Sit down. Enter number on card. Go.
I always made a habit of returning to the same PC room- That way you get to make some friends too.
But either way- Here was my run down of PC rooms.
Ajoshi rooms- Dirty and smelly with the same punters day in and day out.
Usually the computers are out of date and the chair smells like the sweat from some guys butt.
They don't mind if you bring your own beer and get loaded. In fact, most of the time they'll join you.
Kid PC rooms- All PC rooms seem to have a few kids hanging around- Although some of them seem to be popular. Unless you like the sound of 200 children running around playing Starcraft and looking over your shoulder, it's a good idea to avoid these places. Especially on the weekend.
Pure hell.
Those new ones- Fancy, smell good with divided smoking sections. Good computers and a good connection.
Absolutely souless. Avoid.
A good PC room is about who you are and what you want. I found a good one in Ulsan that was a good mix of ajoshi room and those fancy ones that I was happy to go to.
But like I said, avoid the ones that a full of bloody kids. They'll drive you up the wall. |

Yeah, do you really need to say anything? If you walk up to the guy at the counter, of course he's gonna hand you a card. I'm surprised he didn't run over when he saw two clueless foreigners come in without getting a card. |

yeah....we walked in and the guy showed us the cards, and we were cool on all of that, even figured out how to enter the number and everything....
we were wanting to play WOW, or starcraft or one of those fun looking mmomrpg's...I used to play hardcore for 3 years back in the states..and sort of miss it....so that's what i was pursuing this weekend.
I'm going to ask my boss to help me out , by giving me his number and try it tonight...especially it will be something to do when my friends come and visit from the states this spring...or hopefully in the next couple of weeks...
but then again....it is a little confusing..
I guess I COULd just use my boss's name, and card number...as well as the hagwon's address....yet...when my friend went up to the counter at the other bang we visited....he asked in korean to help us out and he said I'm too busy...when he was just sitting there staring at the tv..
so i hope I get to play soon....and i'm so happy we can smoke there too....I read in my guide book koreans are voracious smokers...but I dont' see too many around me..lol.. |

A whitie in a PC- playing Starcraft? Now that I've never seen.
You teach hogwan? Ask your students. While you're at it maybe you can ask them what time WWF wrestling is on TV. |

Let me know if you get the card thing and address sorted out, if so, PM me a usable card number and if it needs to correspond to any real person or place or just needs to be formally correct; if not, I'll get on this soon and PM you the info I used; unknown to most, if you log in at most PC-bangs with the info, and not a card, you save 50 cents, which if you are playing WOW, will add up to a free light dinner when your session is over.
Also I like smaller PC-bangs, which don't often have this: http://www.jikimi.net/clean.htm , which prevents you from getting to most sites that have the word sex somewhere on them, I don't go to PC-bangs to watch porn, but I'm on an anti-censorship crusade these days, so avoid paying my money to PC-bangs that use site-blocking programs. |

Many Korean games do not accept Alien Registration Cards when registering. (this also applies for Kart Rider)
Normally, using a Korean's identififcation details is the normal way around this.
Many people smoke, but I notice this usually during the night.
Don't worry about people looking at you, all you do is look at them
I had little kids freaking out I can play games, hehe, I played games for over 25 years.
Just don't adopt bad habits in a PC Bang. A small number of Koreans have actually died while in a PC Bang because they just play for days with no sleep, eating noodles (or something else with no nutirition). |
