I wonder how many posters on here are searching for jobs this time of year? How are things going? Is it difficult? Bugged by recruiters? What are you looking for / hoping to get?

I'm looking for a job in Seoul, and someone to replace me down here in Jeju at my current school. All of the offers, bar one, that I've gotten for Seoul I've just laughed at.

Still looking.

I just signed a contract for the second time this month. Hopefully this time I won't get any shady last-second crap pulled on me.

I started searching a couple of weeks ago for a uni gig. I cold-called at the school where I eventually signed. They had posted a job on Dave's back in October/November but the finance dept. wouldn't let them hire at that time. When they were finally released to sign someone, all of their prospects had either gone elsewhere or weren't interested anymore. Goes to show that timing is everything. Smile

Let's put it this way. My boss was saying that another high school in town has been advertising for two weeks (other sites, not dave's), and has had no response. They are becoming worried. It is a high school job offering the Gyonngee standard 9 to 5 for 2.0 million. 2 weeks paid vacation (but much more off the books). Hours are lower than most, though.

I know the teacher, and the reason that person left is because they cut the vacation back from a ton to just two weeks (due to Gyongee).

It seems that they have lowered conditions enough that nobody wants these jobs. They are now knocking on the door of not getting a teacher in time, thanks to the immigration transcripts situation.

I know people are bitching about pay/benefits going lower, but I can truly say that it appears schools who offer average crap and wait to the last minute are really being bit in the ass this year.

Personally, I'm not unhappy about them sweating over it.

I wish more schools would go into bat over this, instead of just rolling over and accepting it. A number of schools in my area have retained teachers for a number of years because they offer a generous deal, but the teachers are starting to leave because of this policy. Seems like somone has got his (and yes I'm 90% sure it's a him) knickers in a knot about these schools taking good people away from the GEPIK programme.

By "him" do you mean some Korean guy with GEPIK?

One comment for Gyongee: You get what you pay for! Don't get your knickers in a knot because your contracts are now not worth working for!

I'm looking around, but my boss just offered me a 100,000 raise to sign on another year. If I sign on, I'd have to keep on teaching with no break.

Yeah I am kinda in the same position, plus I have offered to help them out if I re-sign. I figure if I'm not getting a break, and they're not spending the money to send me home or recruit another teacher, I should get some luv for that in the form of an additional bonus. We'll see how that flies in negotiations next week. Laughing

Do you mean that you're not going to ask to be compensated for a flight home? Oooh! That would hurt. You should at least get some money for the plane ticket. My boss didn't say anything, but I'm not signing on unless I get that. The cheapest ticket home is 1.6 million. I'm going to throw that on the table. He is probably trying to get away with not paying that, but that's just wrong.

Oh no, I fully intend to ask for some form of compensation. A break is worth more to me than money, but if that doesn't happen I at least want some of the money their saving by having me stay...let's see my airfare home + a new teacher's airfare here + recruiting costs for a replacement + the stability they get from a teacher they know. That's gotta be worth something. If not, then I guess I'll have to start looking, though I'd probably pay to not go through the job search process. Laughing

In my case, I'm just looking at the plane ticket. It's 1.6 million. I might cut him a break on that and ask for 1.2 or something. Maybe. Probably not. 1.6 is good.
