I went a bit over the top with my souvenir shopping in Zambia earlier this month and now have almost 50 kilos of carved wood coming, on a ship from Durban, South Africa, to Seoul (does it come up the river?).

I��m going to have to collect it from the port, apparently, and probably pay taxes and all that crap. Of course, the freight company in Johannesburg couldn��t tell me anything of how to collect the stuff in Korea.

Has anyone done this kind of thing before and is able to tell me what to do next? (The ship��s due to arrive about the first week of March.)

I would only add that I would try and go with a korean friend (preferably male and scary looking) to avoid paying the 'foreinger price' i.e. being ripped off.

Did you get a bill of lading? If you do, then you can start shopping customs brokers. If not, the company that is going to help you through customs is going to contact you about a week before the items are in (this has been arranged by the people on the African side). They will arrange everything for you and generally someone in their office can speak a bit of enlish. 50,000 Won is the basic customs broker fee. Then they are going to charge you a percentage of the value or the tax if it is taxed (I want to say 2%). They will also help you arrange getting it from the port to your home. For 50 Kilos figure 30.000 for "quick service"

Next time ask for door to door service.
