I know there must be a thread about this somewhere. I think I even remember reading one at some point but when I searched, nothing.

Does anyone know a good place to get herbs in korea? Things like mint, licorice, lemon grass, things you'd find in a health food store back home? Do they exist? I think maybe not but if anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, do anyone know where I can find out the korean words for various herbs? Thanks.

Little flower shops that sell plants also sell herbs, especially in the spring and summer. You'd be getting it in plant form: the best kind. Smile

thanks, yah, I bought thyme and rosemary last summer but right now I need the dried kind and some harder to find herbs. I remember hearing of a great big chinese, sorry...korean, herbal medicine market in some other city in Korea. There must be something like that in seoul. I guess I can always ask my co-workers when I go back to work, though then I have to find some way to figure out what they all are in english...and I am also looking for things that aren't traditionally korean.

most local flower shops should have mint in plant form, and you can buy frozen lemon grass at the foreign food shop next to what the book.

Licorice might be a challenge, since Koreans are generally not fond of the flavor

http://www.bobsredmill.com/ and http://www.barryfarm.com/ both have a decent assortment at reasonable prices and ship overseas. Barry Farms has the larger selection, but takes a bit longer to ship. Licorice root, by the way, is listed under "teas" rather than "herbs and spices."

E-mart sells a bunch of herbs in celo bags, thyme, basil, oregano (I think) and another one, forgot. very cheap, under 2,000 won.

The foreign food market next to "what the book" sells lots of spices, 4,000 I think.

Spices aren't really hard to find. Some one at home can mail them to you. They can take them out of the bottles, put them in zip lock bags, and mail them in a brown bubble envelope, Cheap.

They carry some medicinal herbs at Country Life vegetarian restaurants (run by Seventh Day Adventists) The only one that I've been to is near the Sinsa station, orange line (337) exit 1, (facing the bank, turn right, go short ways to the corner, turn left, see Starbucks - turn left on side street right before Starbucks, about half block on the right side see door with a triangular billiard ball design and a small sign for www.countrylife.kr.co, and it's on the second floor...)02-565-4324 For the other Country Life sites try this link:

I'll have to check this place out. It's pretty close to me. I'll also have to check out the shops in itaewon. Some of the foreign foreign (foreign to me, foreign to Korea) food shops might have some what I am looking for.

Thanks all

When I was there they had goldenseal, echinachia, valerian root, St. John's Wort, Gingko and some others, but their prices seemed kinda high...
