In LA, around New Year's, the city posts billboards saying "What goes up, must come down" as a warning to people not to fire guns to celebrate.

Wouldn't highly publicised arrests of people who do that be a more effective deterrent than public service announcements? Confused And from what I have read, yes, they can monitor, tape, and identify such people (usually in open view on building rooftops). Public service announcements? ... I don't get it.

Shannon's Law

Shannon's law refers to specific changes in Arizona statutes, enacted in 2000, making it a felony offence to
discharge firearms randomly into the air, resulting in injury or death.
Shannon's law is named after Shannon Smith, a Phoenix fourteen year old girl killed by a stray bullet in June 1999. Smith's parents, after being informed that the alleged assailant's activity constituted, at most, a misdemeanor offense, advocated for stronger penalties, to prevent future tragedies of this kind.

Violation of Shannon's law is defined as a felony offense in Arizona. However, as with most felony offenses in US jurisdictions, a person charged with this offense can strike a plea bargain with prosecutors, and may be eligible for only a misdemeanor conviction.

On December 31, 2003, police in the city of Glendale began using equipment which alerted them to the location from which a shot was fired. As random discharge of firearms are common in some areas of the U.S. on New Year's Eve, Fourth of July, and other holidays, four arrests of Shannon's law violators were made that night, and it is expected that more Arizona police departments will receive similar equipment.

While a dropped penny or bullet may not likely pierce skin or penetrate skulls, how about that arrow that I nearly stepped under? Surely that would have resulted in some serious damage, no? Those arrows were heavier than a bullet, and oh what heights they'd reach -- we'd lose sight of them they flew so high -- before turning (pointy metal) head-down, and then began hurtling Earthward at an ever-gathering speed.

Sparkles? Anybody? What do you think would have happened? Because I've always referred to that incident as my first narrow escape from death.

To answer your question JG...if it hit you in the right place( head, neck, you get the idea)...you'd be dead.

Strange...we played the same game as kids...we all had regular bows, but one of my friends had just purchased a new compound bow.
Him..."Hey, how high do you think this thing can shoot?"
His older brother..."Here, give it to me and we'll find out."
...swoooosh...
The 6 of us "Wow!...look how high it's going....cool.......hey....where did it go Shocked ...run!!!"
We all ran except my older brother...he froze...the arrow came down 6 inches from him...it went 4 inches into packed earth...we all felt more than a little foolish after that one.
With our regular bows, we had a difficult time matching that depth
shooting our arrows straight into the ground.
Suffice it to say...if it had hit him...he too would be dead.
Oh, the immortal days of youth. Cool

Glad your still with us JG Wink

That sounds like a fun game. Yes, an arrow would kill you if it hit you in the right place. That's why armies used to fire them, I believe Laughing . Like someone already mentioned, it's all about velocity. But a penny wouldn't mortally wound a person, let alone hurt them very much. Anyone who buys into that probably believes fans are lethal when used in a closed room.

Has hail ever killed anyone? Maybe it smarts a little, but that's only because you're likely to get pelted by thousands at a time. In the same way that one drop of water won't get you wet, one coin (or hail stone)won't maim or kill you. Now if it ever happens that coins pour from the sky, perhaps we'll see some mayhem.

In the Marine Corps they constantly drilled us to feel naked without something on our head so that we would always wear our kevlar in combat zones. Not because a helmet would protect from direct fire, but because falling debris creates a lot of casualties too.

I don't know about a penny but a British Pound coin will properly do your head in. I guarantee it.

What's the proof? Are you saying that your nonsensical post proves that your own skull has been injured by such a bullet?

The one piece of information you neglected to add, Beavis, is the amount of force necessary to penetrate a skull. Your other information is correct but meaningless without the key item.

Damm, Bevis just proved that a nerd being kewl with "my MTV" equals the square of idiocy! Wholly Sheit, Batman!!!

(I apologize for the offensive, non-PG-13, content material of my little flame. But, Bevis had it coming considering his idiocy on other threads.)

How about if you apply that fancy equation to my query about how long it takes for said bullet to return to it's point of takeoff? How high does it go? I'm serious. Next Canada Day I don't want to accidentally shoot down some plane flying overhead. Or, catch it on the bullet's way down. I guess in that case you could really kill two birds with one bullet. One on the way up and one on the way down - provided the bullet goes through the first one.
