So, even though it was only two weeks, I would have still needed the stamp in the passport and something on the back of my ARC. Hmmm.

Two minutes would be illegal if you were teaching at a place other than the one on your ARC and you were being paid for it.

Not if it was done legally. I still haven't had this confirmed yet. I've been told on this thread that you need to go through immigration and have the passport/ARC stamped with your schedule, etc. I'm just not sure that if in this case my boss just informed immigration and everything's on the up and up because it was only for two weeks. I'm, however, not doubting that it was illegal. Now I'm just wondering why it would've been done illegally since LG is a big company. I taught at LG. Are they known to do things illegally? Like maybe paying my boss under the table. Or maybe they just paid my boss. Anyway, I just want to get my share and be taxed little or not at all.

Cmon, Koran companie doing things illegally...that would NEVER happen. Do you have your ARC? If yes, check the back. Is there something there about this job? If you dint have your ARC....what are you doing giving this up to your boss?

Jinju's right...nothing on the back or in your passport means it wasn't legit. The two recent camps I've done were for only three weeks and I had the stuff done for the summer one(before changes to the requirements for the F-2)...why would I have to go to immi for a three-week camp but you don't have to for a two-week one? I have also worked at other places outside of my regular workplace including a bank and a boys' middle school in Dae-goo back in '97...both of the places were written on the back of my ARC then. Granted, they were for a longer duration than two weeks, but...a large company like LG has lots of inventive ways of hiding or writing things off, your boss probably knows a few tricks as well. Oftentimes in Korea, it's seen as shrewd business tactics, not terribly illegal. If you call them on it, like in your case, you can probably get what you want as well as a little extra respect...or they may bury you in a riverbed. Wink Anyway, I was trying to find some stuff that your boss could've done on-line, but I think that all he can do is make a reservation...that's it. Either you or he has to bring all the junk I mentioned before into the office in order to have it processed. Your case is the first case I've ever heard of this being done over the phone.

Just tell your boss to give you the LG money cash in hand and make sure that he does things legitly next time. The only thing I really don't like about this is that fact that you could've been deported if you were caught. If you like Korea and/or have a good relationship with a g/f, that isn't cool.

I gave my ARC and passport to him at work and he gave them back to me a few minutes later. I wasn't born yesterday. I even mentioned to him about this being done legally and he said that it was.

Were all of the 2nd jobs you did paid directly to you? Were any paid to your boss and then he paid you? Maybe it doesn't make a difference since one would have to advise immigration of any second or third jobs at other places of employment and have the stamps to prove you're ok to be teaching at the 2nd job if anyone were doing a check up. I'm just curious if all your jobs were directly paid to you or not. I want to bring as much information as I can to get that psychological edge when I speak to him about this tomorrow.

Those two in Dae-goo were paid directly to our boss. Two of us from the hakwon were doing two different classes at the middle school while I was doing the bank on my own. I actually remember one day my co-worker was instructed to pick up the money from the school. Although I can't remember the exact amts, we compared what they were getting with what we were getting. Things may've changed some(depending on arrangements), but at that time, we were taxed by our employer and not the places we were farmed out to. We were paid well for these extra/ot classes as was our hakwon. Our hakwon taxed us. Thinking back, I guess we may have been taxed too much, but that was my first year here and I didn't know a whole hell of a lot about that noise. I don't know what the hakwon did with the books wrt to the money they received from the school or the bank. For two most recent camps I've done, my wife has been my sponsor(although I received permission from my middle school in the summertime as it was still required then). Then, I had to get permission from my school. There were no strings attached. They got nothing from my working at the other place...my bank account was credited. But, the other place did tax me(small amt). I guess someone somewhere should be taxed, right?

I taught at LG from Jan 9 to Jan 20. Do you think LG would pay on the 17th of the following month? I have my doubts. Especially since my boss bought a projector, screen and DVD player right after the job was finished.

Laughing That's sth that I'll have to keep as a quote to use at a later time.

Honestly, I don't know. Unis pay mid-to-late month. My middle school usu pays other teachers during the third week, but I don't get paid until the last day of the month(being a foreigner). Who knows how a big place like LG does their accounting...maybe that is when they do all their accts payable, payroll, etc? Just be waiting in your boss' office when he comes in on the 17th...if he's wearing a new Armani suit, be extra wary.

He wouldn't buy an Armani suit. I wear more expensive clothes than he does.

Oh, I'll bring up the new video equipment tomorrow. Just seems like too much of a coincidence. Anyway, I get a little overworried about these kinds of things, but I'm sure I'll get paid. He tries things though. He tried with pension, but I called them to make sure. He tried with the new medical deal saying something about back payments. Trust me. He was looking for all avenues to fill his pockets. The only things I'm getting screwed on now is taxes (3.7%) and the first 5 months pension because he didn't start my account unti the 6th month. There are other instances where he's lied and I've caught him. I don't like that, but I'm sure my situation is golden compared to about 95% of the jobs out there. You have to stay on top of these buggers.

Sadly...an ESL teacher in Korea also must act as a lawyer. Too bad I don't get a lawyer's pay.

So it was illegal. Without it being directly on the back of your ARC it was not legal in any way, shape or form.

Thanks. Pretty crazy working for a high profile company like that illegally. What's the sense? I thought something was up at the time, but I thought my boss was taking care of it. So, I just taught and now I'm wondering. Was wondering. I suppose this is done a lot with teachers working part-time and all.
