Security deposit and getting fired

So I read in a thread somewhere that the $600 deposit is illegal. What law does it break? Where is this law text located? How would I go about telling my director it is illegal and I need it back NOW? Of course there is no way to tell him it is illegal without some of the background info.

Next question: I told my director I am not staying with this school for another year, and today he wanted to chat with me about a complaint that was of course said to be started by me. The director then said that complaints of this nature have gotten people fired before. I can only assume he meant me, BUT I think he's just trying to act tough because there is absolutely no reason to let me go other then I'm not staying, I've recently requested the proper tax document used for paystubs, and I am trying to find out how illegal the $600 deposit is. So what grounds does a director/hagwon owner have to fire you and what avenues do I have to A.protect myself from it, B. fight it if it turns out to be a shady severence?

EFL LAW will help you..
IF your director tries to break his part of the contract he will get done!
problem is these slimey korean hakwon owners dont want to part with their money! so they will try to fire you around the 10th or 11th month to save on severance.. they just hire a new teacher and repeat the cycle its a way of them saving the severance! and ticket..

The deposit is legal if you agreed to it by signing a contract that stated it was part of the contractual agreement.

In short: read your contract!

If there is no clause about a deposit in there you can ask for that money back right away as it was deducted illegally. Then again this might backfire on you considering what you said about your school director....

Do you know if he is paying into the pension fund? Most hakwon directors don't. That IS illegal and you could casually mention that if you get fired you will take a stroll down to the tax office and see if he's been paying. Fight fire with fire.

Yes, good point. There is also the tax office. I was lucky not to pay a deposit because a Korea teacher veteran who started before me told my boss that this showed that he didn't trust the teachers. Now I would never pay it. This was only 100,000 Won a month for the first three months. I say "only", but it's still quite a bit and you should never trust anyone with your money. There are currently two teachers that owe me money and I'll never see it again. Even one that paid me back underestimated the amount and I had to correct him.

The hagwon boss doesn't need this money. If he/she does, stay away. Just don't do it. It will just cause you headaches. These bosses are like children who don't pay their parents back. Fact is, you are not their parent and they are not your child.
