Raising Tuition (The Star)

Removing Calculus (The Star)

Removing Calculus from math programs might be ok as long as they still offer an elective in Calculus (that's the way it was in NB). I really wanted to take it back in high school because I knew I would need it for uni (which I really, really did). But keep raising tuition and scrubbing all the "hard" subjects students don't seem to like will create an upper class of stupid, spoiled rich kids in the future.

Also, I heard that some schools have scrubbed PE as a mandatory subject (for highschools atleast). Anyone know if this is true?

I remember calculus. That's the class where some German guy was blabbing on and on about something and I'd turn around to ask someone what was up and they were sleeping. Good times! I passed!

In my high school, after grade 9 PE was optional.
By the later years in high school, gym was just a class for the kids who actually knew how to play sports to show off, and for the poor suckers who didn't to be embarassed. I was in between these these 2 Embarassed
I can't remember whether pre-cal was an option or mandatory, but calculus was definitely optional.
Glad I took them though... I would have been screwed since I had to take calculus for science in universtiy!

On the first day of class for my first-year Calculus class in university, the prof asked the class how many of us were from New Brunswick. After a bunch of us raised our hands, her response was, "See me after class about if you wish to continue taking this course," suggesting that New Brunswick students may wish to take remedial math before going for a credit in the subject.

That's pretty bad. I'm from New Brunswick. Guess it has to do with it not being a regular part of high school curriculum except for the chosen few who take/took advance math. Or maybe she thinks New Brunswickers are stupid.

Some of those university courses were stupid. Overpaid professors babbling on and on. Calculus at 8:30 in the morning. My mom worked at the university and I used to hide in her car and sleep.

I guess some people didn't take Calc as an option (which is stupid if they are in university calc). I think there should be some mandatory Calc in a mandatory class. In NB, you could take Advanced Math, then Calc, both electives.

Calculus was an option in Alberta as well. I tried to take it but had to take it via distance. To continue taking it, you had to get 80%+ on tests. There was one test I could not get 80 on, so I dropped it. Should've taken spanish instead.

My school had 10/11/12-3(mod), 10/11/12-2(reg), 10/11/12-1(advanced), and 10/11/12-IB for most classes. Things may've changed though seeing as I graduated back in '87. Shocked Phys. Ed. was mandatory for one year, usu taken in grade 10...back when I went, we only had 10, 11, and 12, not 9. I'm from NB as well.

Graduated '97 in NB.

There were Grade 10/11/12 Math (with 1, 2 and 3 levels). Most people took '10' in grade 10, and '11 and 12' in grade 11. You then took Advanced math 1st semester grade 12 and Calc 2nd semester. Phys. Ed. was the same and the grade 9's had just come into the fold the year before (I only had 3 years of high school).

I graduated in '92. Advanced Math was Calculus then. I took it plus all level 1 math and still felt pretty overwhelmed, to be honest. I did stay out the course though.
