One last question SJ (I suppose I should be doing this via PM) ... can you take in a roll of undeveloped slide film and have them process it for you onto a CD rather than the actual slides?

I'm not knowledgable about photography at all. I like taking pics though.

I have a great little 'dica' the Sony DSC-T3, it's a good point and shoot camera though you can get reasonable shots with a tripod, I love it's close up mode and took some stunning IMHO shots last Autumn in the UK. It takes great little shots but I want something better for more serious shots. I'd ideally like a nice digital slr, but they're very expensive.

I'd like to get more into the art and science of photography. Photography is a lot like my first love, music. Music and Photography are both arts and science.

I think it is high time that there is another unofficial dave's photo competition.

I've looked at some of the impressive work carried out by you folks and you generally get a big thumbs up. I especially like the composition of some of Swiss James's shots.

you know if you want to get more into the technical side, you can pick up a film SLR and a few lenses for buttons now.
On ebay we're talking well under 100 US dollars for the setup I'm using, and there are plenty of camera shops in Seoul that'll sort you out for a bit more if you want to check them out before you buy.

indy- I'm sick of slide film right now- just picked up a load of slides where I paid to have them mounted and then scanned (seems to be easier and cheaper to have them scanned when they're just strips of developed film, not mounted with plastic frames).
Communication breakdown, anyway it cost me a horrific 34,000 fcking won for one film- and hardly any of the shots turned out because the lighting conditions were totally wrong for that type of film.
What the hell was I thinking?

Anyway to answer your question, I'm pretty sure you have to get the film processed and then they scan the results- with negative film you can skip the printing stage which makes it cheaper, but with slides- it costs more than the old fashioned way.

Thanks for the info. I would have thought they could just scan unmounted slides. Like you said, probably communication breakdown.

That's the thing with slide film ... it's pretty finicky when it comes to lighting. Bracketing your exposures is the safe way, but then you're wasting frames for expensive to process film. Mmmmm...

BTW, I just found out I'm coming into possession of a Yashica TLR 4x5 this weekend. Looks like this:

Anyway, though the group of posters in this thread is small, it seems like a dedicated and knowledgable group. Perhaps we should arrange a photo get together sometime? Its always good to shoot with others so as to get fresh ideas and perspectives on things.

Great suggestion about TrekEarth!

I switched to digital a couple of years ago and became a convert before I finished my first trip with the camera. This Christmas, I upgraded to a DSLR (Olympus E500) and like it a lot, so far. There's a hellava lot to learn about it, but it's pleasant to give myself assignments.

but kim young seob photo gallery in insadong, has had some great shows in the past year since i've been in korea.
from classics like andre kertesz and bill brandt, to contemporary korean (and a few foreign photographer's shows in its history) exhibits.

Hey there guys,

I just spotted this and am so glad to find others into photography.

I have a NIkon D70 with kit lens, its excellent. And a Sigma 170-500mm Zoom/Tele.

I took this shot last weekend.

With no editing.

After a bit of contrast and sharpening.

I love nature photography so thats why I got the big lens!! LOL!!!

We should hook up some time and go shooting photos somewhere!
