Hey, the new apartment I've moved into is really, really nice. The one downside being the TV channels available are alot less than I'm used to. They have BBC world and star movie channel but don't have things like OCN, Super action, CGV, XTM, etc. I live on movies during weeknights so the complex manager suggested satellite tv. It's 200,000 or so to install and then only about 15,000-20,000 per month after that.

Has anybody else got satellite tv? What/how many channels do you get and is it worth it? I'm going to be in this job for the forseeable future so I need some decent telly.

Thanks alot, I'll probably be in this job for a couple of years or more so a 2 year contract will be okay, 20,000w per month isn't too much anyway.

Did you get it? How many channels did you get?

Skylife have specials sometimes where you only pay like 30.000 for the installation or something.. check into it..
channels are about 50 or so..
you can of course pay more and get more movie channels..

I'm normally happy with the regular Korean cable tv as well, with OCN, super action, CGV, XTM,etc, that's enough for me though some movies are repeated ad naseum.

I have a french channel too, and some other sports channels I'm sure other lads would love to have, but I'm interested in basically just the movie channels.

I'll enquire about the specials that were mentioned.

As I've heard - from friends who have satellite TV - you can transfer your equipment if you do move to a new apartment. So, even if you change jobs you can fulfill the two year commitment so long as you stay in Korea.

While illegal I have always thought of getting a satellite from Japan or the Philippines. These have lots and lots of channels in English and are actually digital--unlike Skylife. You cannot get one from the states (DirectTV) because it's the other side of the world and there is no line of sight (see Indepence Day), but these two countries will work no problem if you get the azimuth and longitude correct.

I checked into skylife too, and its a 2 year contract.. i think thats a bit crazy.. i asked if i could pay for a 1 yr contract and my monthly payments could be increased slightly.. oh no.. only 2year contract.

I recently moved into my new apt and its one of those typical high rise apts in korea.. I asked the security guy about getting cable tv and he said we dont offer it here.. when asked why, i was told , "because most people in the building have skylife". what the hell is that suppose to mean.

The building is already wired for cable tv when it was built.. so why the hell cant the cable guy just connected a wire from the main box.

Rediculous.. i think he didnt want to bother with me. i know many people have the skylife, but it doesnt make sense not to offer cable .. sounds so communist like..

put that into NAVER and check out the available cable providers in Korea
there are not many actually..
I also wonder about this place..
I mean Korea the leader in technology and all than can come up with are a couple cable channels and SKYLIFE..
jesus my brother in the states says he has something like 1000 channels
my uncle in Italy has like 500 we even get KBS..
korea you are lucky to get 100 with 30 of them being shopping channels!

in regards to apartments,..
you need to ask the Apartment people, not the man who sits in the rat hole and watches the monitors he is on a need to know basis.. all he knows is when the rubbish trucks come.,.
talk to the office.

my apartments the AJUMAS organized cable for us..
so we all pay like 4000 a month and its real good..
but I heard the cable companies are trying to raise there prices sometihng like 600%..

skylife is free for installation and the dish but you must sign for 3 years
roughly 20.000 won a month for 120 channels, 50 of them are radio channels..
I will wait for my new apartment ajumas to sort out cable here..
and I will only pay 10.000 max otherwise I will just get my own cable..
and I will get skylife too..
that way I pay around 30.000 a month and I should have a good channel selection..

still where are the INTERNATIONAL Channels?? where are the 500 channels??
reminds me of New zealand SKY where you get like 10 channels for 40 bucks a months.. GARBAGE!!

I would kill for a Filipino TV hookup. When I visited there in February I was amazed at the number of great channels they had on basic cable. At least 50-70% are in English...
