In 1996, I remember this scholar from the Sejong Institute, a think tank in Seoul, saying that most collapse predictions for North Korea were bunk and that the North could last another 20 years. The then CIA director had said he expected the North to last only another three years, and most people were saying the only question was WHEN the North would collapse, not if.
Another Korean scholar at a seminar I attended pointed out that numerous scholars mentioned the "soft" and "hard" landing theories of North Korea's demise, but that few or none spoke of the "no" landing theory, as in Kim Jong-il and Co. will retain power.
So much for the "experts." |

NK survived the massive famine of the 90s, so i doubt that it's going away any time soon now.
my personal belief is that change will eventually come in the way it is coming to china; when kim jong-il gets too old to rule, or dies, slow reform will start taking place. forcing them to change would probably be too disastrous so i believe this is the best that can be hoped for. |

Slow change will occur but I'm not sure it will prevent the demise of the regime because I simply don't believe the succesor to Kim Jong Il that will be credible in the eyes of North Koreans. It is believed one of the Kim Jong Il's will succeed him, but they are all relative unknowns who have accomplished little on their own that can be spun into a cult of personality (on top of the fact that a generational gaps exists between them and Kim Il Sung, which will make it difficult to build a cult of personality around them simply based on their pedigree). Then again, they may use this at their advantage to gain the trust of foreign nations. |

you know what I love? Talking about this kind of stuff with my buddies in a bar when we're all a bit drunk.
One of us read most a book about North Korea, and I've saw an article in Time magazine when my plane was delayed so we're pretty much experts on the whole field.
I've never actually met a North Korean, but I have been to the DMZ and seen it through a telescope so I think that when their leader (who I saw in Team America) dies, the 22 million people in that country will probably zzzzzzz |

| I predict a government-led communist insurrection against the populace in the South before the regime up North ever collapses. |

I think someone read The End of History and the Last Man by Francis Fukuyama one times too often!
You do realize he was beaten to an intellectual pulp and basically relegated to the light history section by most of his peers right? |

Nahhh billy...I got that book right here. Very useful.
I also have a copy of "The Statement of the obvious Method: a 12 step program". That comes in handy in here too.
