| I'll be graduating this June. From what I've heard my Uni takes 1-2 months before they send you a diploma. Is there any way to get going in Korea before this? |

Basically no.
You need you degree verified (i.e. notarized) by the consulate or embassy to get a work visa. |

| I actually just called and they're telling me it's actually 3-4 months right now! UGH! They did say they can offer a degree verification letter....is this an option? |

Again, basically No.
I asked that same question when I was still in the consideration phases and called the Embassy (actually 3 in Canada) and they all told me they would not accept a letter at all. It had to be either my original degree or a notarized copy. They've had a lot of trouble with forged degrees, so a letter is just not going to cut it. |

| What if I go to Korea before I get a job? When I get the job, can I get my degree notarized there, or do I just show the original diploma at the immigration office to get the e-2? Or, if you're in Korea you're forced to go to Fukoka Japan to get the e-2 so that's where they notarize the degree? |

You can't start working legally until you have your degree. |

You seem to be in the waiting zone noguri.
If you come here and work before you get your degree then you will be doing so illegally. That would be a choice (a dumb choice in my opinion) but it would also mean rolling the dice as if you get busted (more likely than before since they are on the lookout) you will get fined and most likely deported and all because you did not want to wait for your degree.
My question is: what's the hurry here? |

You can come to Korea first on a tourist visa if you want, but as others have said, you cannot start working until you get the E-2 visa. Once you get your degree, you give it to the school that hired you and they use it to get you your visa. You don't have to get your degree notarized in Japan, but you will have to go there (or any other country) to pick up your E-2 visa after the local immigration office has approved your degree.
However, if you just wait for your degree and get your E-2 visa while still in your home country, you won't have to go to Japan at all. You can come directly to Korea and start working. |

| Thanks for the feedback, y'all. Uh, I should have made clear that unlike the OP, I HAVE my degree. But I had the impression from reading threads on Dave's that it is a good idea to VISIT the schools I'm thinking about working for, try to talk to the other foreign teachers, etc. Also I thought maybe face-to-face I might be better able to negotiate a contract that suits me. SO I thought maybe I should just go to Korea and then look at jobs. |

Well coming over to look for a job certainly has its advantages but it also has drawbacks (mainly financial ones). |

Don't they give you your diploma on graduation day? Your university sounds like a hagwon. |

Don't they give you your diploma on graduation day? Your university sounds like a hagwon. |
If you attend graduation. Not everyone attends. I didn't. I moved to another city three weeks after writing my last exam.
Graduation isn't actually on the very last day of exams. Most schools don't have their graduation until the end of summer or fall before regular session starts again.

Oh yeah. Well, I guess it depends on that then. It was so long ago that I forgot about the 2 or 3 weeks after exams. And that differs depending on the university. |
