I've heard rumblings about boats that travel back and forth to China from Korea, but I can't seem to find any solid information about them. I'd imagine that they'd take a very long time, but if I wanted to travel on a budget it would be a good option. Does anybody know what the boat is like? Whether there are sleeping accomodations, etc?

Yea, there are at least 3 destinations and all leave regularly from Incheon. All cost approx $100 and leave several times a week. |

It sounds like fun, but this post from a while back puts me off

However ... my advice is only use it if you are very prepared and have a lot of free time on your hands:
** 5 hours on the bus from Seoul to Sokcho.
** 17 hours on the ferry Sokcho to Zarubino.
** 2 hours (minimum) to clear immigration in Zarubino (think of 300 sea-sick babushkas disembarking through 2 immigration counters, who all have visa problems).
** 2 more hours by road (closer to 3) from Zarubino to Vladivostok.
All up: perhaps somewhere approaching a 30 hour trip (to travel a mere 400 miles). |

Okay, but he's not going to Russia, he wants to go to China.
I know people that have done it and rather enjoyed themselves, but they weren't by themself. There is a thread on here about someone that did it, but I am not going to search for it.
I think it is a good idea, go for it. |

I've taken the boat from Incheon to Qingdao and back a couple of times. It's a lovely way to travel. The second class tickets were 130,000 for a comfortable bunk in a 4-bed room (2 bunkbeds). Rooms are quite nice and clean, sink, tv, and little dining table. The crossing takes about 16 hours, leaves in the afternoon/evening and arrives the next morning. There were also 1st class tickets for 160,000 (2 pax per room) and common room tickets for 110,000 which gets you a spot on the floor with a whole bunch of other people. Also, deluxe tickets for 200,000.

I took one to Tianjin (outside Beijing).. I chose to sleep in a small cabin (4 beds total in there).. but there are also lots of beds in the common areas. |
