What was your worst class ever and why?

On a friday I work way out in the country in a small town. Recently I've only been having one class on a friday. Last week I turned up and they said "Today, new class ok?". So, I said "Ok", fair enough.

It turns out that they would be 5-7yrs old.. so kindergarten. I hate kindergarten, and have almost no experience teaching it, but I guess I have to do it. I asked how many students.. I was told "I think, more than 10". So I think Ok.. I can do this. I decided we'd do something on the weather (I had a few handouts I'd used for an elementary class before), and I was prepared for up to 15 students.

In this place I have no resources at the moment. My whiteboard has gone walkabout and there's no books, but at least I'm prepared I think. I envisage us sitting around the big table in my office, where they can each sit down, and we can learn a few words and maybe draw some pictures or something.

Anyway class time rolls round..

They didn't lie to me, there were more than 10 students. There were 47 students. FORTY SEVEN. Now all my plans are screwed.. they can't come in my office, we can't do the few worksheets I'd prepared, and I don't even have a whiteboard or any books as a prop. As well as 47 kids there are about 6 adults hanging around watching me.

It was pretty disastrous.

I would have walked out of the class and told the director that I wouldn't teach under those conditions. Screw that!

Somebody has to get their act together at that school (and it's not you).

Its not a school, its just a little town office thing, its free classes for the locals. Anyway they divided it into two classes of 'only' twenty-something students per class today.. that was an improvement. My whiteboard hasn't come back though grrr..

For a native speaker with such young students, that's still a crazy high number. You don't need to hear it from me that they didn't show you a lot of consideration by springing that on you. I'd be recalibrating my position in that contract accordingly.

Don't feel bad about that. I don't know anyone, maybe Jesus or Mother Teresa, who could do well in such a situation

My worst class ever consisted of one middle school boy who did nothing but
fold his arms on his desk, lay his head down and close his eyes until he would
eventually start whistling in his sleep. Whatever devices I used to wake him
up managed only to temporarily stop the strange pitch that was oozing through
his nostrils. Cool
