I assume this is a joke about Walden University? That place is a degree mill, if memory serves. Or maybe I'm thinking of another place... can't remember. |

Actually I'm really interested in a phD at Walden University. Do people consider it to be a low quality "degree mill" type school? I'd never heard that before, but is BBE says it, I wonder if others have that perception as well. Any others who've heard/felt that?
and, thank you for that great list! Very very useful! Should be in the FAQ! |

Companies' Graduate Programs Challenge Colleges of Education
Abstract: Several companies that operate for-profit colleges are expanding their offerings of master's and doctoral degrees in education. The four companies with the biggest presence in teacher education -- Apollo Group (University of Phoenix), Capella Education, Education Management Corporation, and Sylvan Learning Systems (Walden University) -- now collectively enroll more than 22,500 students pursuing master's or doctoral degrees. According to the U.S. Department of Education, about 130,000 people received master's degrees in education in the 2001 academic year, the most recent year for which statistics are available. An additional 6,700 received doctorates.

Capella, Walden, Phoenix ...
aren't worthy to be on any list with...
Purdue, Montana, Nebraska.
The former trio is to the latter as a used car salesman is to a wealthy industrialist. |

Walden University--in case you care
When I began my adult pursuit of my degree I found this site, and read it avidly for advice regarding schools. That was in late '03 and I am now on my third school, and would like to give any insight I can to those beginning the journey.
Thomas Edison State College is a great school that helped me tremendously. They are great place to take certain classes (or tests) and to bank credits. They do not offer everything.
From there I moved to UoP. I left when I became tired of being solicted (I AM ALREADY A STUDENT!!!!), and when a comm class turned into a bitch sesson for failed marriages (even the instructor!). I felt the value of the degree was cheapened by the relentless advertising. I also felt a profound lack of satisfaction (I want my degree, but I do want to learn from it!).
I chose Walden over Ellis and AIU and I am very happy. Walden has been a great experience (I am on class # 5). Each class has been structered differently, which adds to the variety. The instructors and students alike are more involved than I have experienced with other schools. I plan to work on my bachelor's and master's at the same time and save several classes.
In long (grin), Walden has proven in every way to be a top quality school for learning, and I am proud to display the name on the back window of my car.

My daughter just started in the Masters degree in Psychology program at Walden. She is very impressed as well and excited about beginning her studies.

Good story. I'm glad it's working out for you. Thanks for your contribution. In my opinion this school isn't given the credit it deserves.

Thanks for the info Trish...I am considering Walden (and other schools) for a future PhD and am always glad to see positive feedback on the school.

Trish,
I see courses at Walden are 6 weeks long. How many hours do you estimate you put in each week on your courses?
Thanks
Rhonda

Can a grad student enroll in one course per term and still qualify for financial aid at Walden? In other words, what do they consider half-time for grad students?

Thanks for posting this. I wasn't sure about Walden but have begun the application process - in part based on this thread.
I really appreciate you sharing your experiences.

Did I see correctly that it costs 70K+ for a PhD at Walden?
$4000+/qtr X 4.5 years = $72,000
I guess that counts me out.

Walden is fully regionally accredited. Definitely not a degree mill.

My bad... I now remember it was Lambert University that was the degree mill. I just remembered that the name of the university had a last-name similar to someone I went to elementary school with (both Walden and Lambert were names of peers). |

That is the modus operandi of mill schools, to sound "similar'(=real to the uniformed) to a legitimate school. Very confusing for people opting for online study options(pricey too, as some mills charge $10,000 for there pseudo script with "coursework").
Therefore, vetting schools through the ODA list and Degreeinfo who's, members are to education as Dave's Cafe is to ESL teachers; a great legitimacy litmus test. |

People are going to a "university" run by Sylvan!?!
Is there a practical difference for getting jobs in Korea or elsewhere between a PhD and an EdD? |
