Would those "individual voters" include, for example, the CEO of Imperial Oil going up to Harper at a fundraiser, shaking his hand with a big smile, and dropping a hefty check(drawn from his own personal account of course) in Harper's front pocket? |
Individual voters are limited to $5000. And ANY money donated to any political party over $200 must be reported. |

I really wish people would read the entire article AND read about Canada's federal Elections Act BEFORE making statements like the above.
Bottom line: IF what Gore says is true and Harper was funded by Big Oil then he broke the law. Pure and simple. But I know that Dave's posters would NEVER accuse someone without proof, so let's see it.  |

Sorry, I just skimmed what Gore said. I have no reason to think Harper and the Conservatives broke any election laws. In fact I'd be surprised to hear that any party did- 'keeping your nose clean' is the slogan of the moment. |

There are many ways to repay a politician his or her favours. Remember how a former Prime Minister is believed to have been repaid with cushy jobs? |

This is an interesting debate. Let's assume for the moment that Harper was funded by Big Oil.
This then raises three very important questions
1. Where was Big Oil during Harper's LAST campaign...when he lost?
2. Exactly how did Big Oil manage to give Harper 124 seats?
3. If Big Oil is such a determining factor of an election race how did the Liberals manage to win four elections in a row? They are not exactly Big Oil's dream of a governing party (not with the Kyoto Accord).
Isn't it simpler to just accept that a plurality (thank you Mr. OTOH) of Canadians voters were fed up with Liberal corruption and incompetence and threw them out?

Yes.
Gore is the only person I've heard making this accusation... as far as I know no one in Ottawa has made it, and if it had even a speck of truth I would imagine Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe- among others- would be all over this.
Not hard to guess that Gore's target audience for this message isn't really anyone but fellow Democrats. |
