How did you get to Korea?

Nothing as simplistic as "by plane". What I mean is, how did you get your current job in Korea?

I'm in a bit of dilemma, because I spent several years in Korea and recently returned home. Now I'm looking to go back and I'm not liking what I'm seeing.

When I first came to Korea, there were tons of advertisements from both schools and recruiters, it was fairly easy to do some cross-checking, see how the school is, if its blacklisted etc. Now it seems the only ads are from recruiters. I hate recruiters. I worked as a recruiter. Recruiters are scum.

But it seems like I'm stuck using them, problem is, I'm being very selective with what I want in a job and where it is.

So, how did you get your current job in Korea? Did you use a recruiter? How was the experience? Any recommended recruiters? If anyone had any problems and their recruiter stepped up for them, that would be a real big bonus.

Cheers,

Jack.

Jack,
Just fly over yourself and hit the pavement with a juiced up resume in hand. You'll do fine if you have half a brain and look normal.
Forget the recruiters, you're right. They are scum.

When I came 7 years ago, I met directly with the academic manager while he was in the US. He was a kyopo and was on a recruiting trip to find teachers for a new school from US-based teacher training programs.

Second job was through a referal from the first (first school closed).

Third job was from someone I worked with at the first. I was planning on leaving Korea. A friend from the first place (another kyopo) was heading the english department at another school and asked me to come work with him.

Fourth (and current) job is not in English-education industry at all. Came through all of the networks and contacts I had made throughout my first years with the intention of moving into business. I've been in this job now for over 3 years, get paid (legally) more than 3 times what I got in my first jobs (I work a lot more, though) and much happier while seeing a different side of life in Korea.

Never used a recruiter. Use your contacts, your brains and your objectives and you'll do fine.
