|

i lived in seoul for 2 years and taught in a university, had a great time, etc and have been teaching in the states now for 2 years. i wouldn't mind coming back over for a visit during the summer holidays, see some friends, visit some old haunts and teach temporarily to earn a little travel cash.
do you think it is feasible to fly myself over in may on a one-way ticket, procure a hogwan job (6 hrs a day, afternoons) -- with them paying for my visa run to japan and setting me up in a furnished apartment for the summer? i don't want to screw anybody over and therefore would like to be straight up about it (no recruiters, free tix, year long contracts, ect) .. just a temp teaching job until i come back to the states in mid-august.
it would basically be a way to finance a summer holiday and maybe some travel in the phillipines in august before i come back.
i don't see a problem with it if i pay my own airfare and be honest about it being a month-to-month deal.
i've also considered summer camps, but most are out in the boonies and they work the dog crap out of you and don't pay much more than a hoggie job, require you to share a dorm, etc. .... too old for that routine
any ideas for making this happen? |

You could easily substitute teach for a native English-speaking teacher wanting a summer break in their year-long contract.
But you wouldn't get a visa run or apartment out of it, though if you wanna make it 3 or 4 full months, you might get that too.
Good luck whatever. |

It is certainly possible to get short-to-mid-term substituting positions, often staying in the housing of the person you are subbing for. But I don't know any way to do it legally. I think people of a certain age from some countries can get a "working holiday visa," but it's not available for people from the US, and I don't know if you can legally teach with that visa. |

this is what i envision: a hogwan loses a teacher in the spring and is having trouble finding a replacement to sign a year contract. i arrive -- say i can start immediately on a month to month basis while they search for a more permanent person. they fly me to osaka for the visa and put me in the apt that the old teacher was using. after a couple of months they find someone else and i go to the phillipines before returning to the states. i might even be willing to pay for my own visa run if the pay/ housing is good at the hoggie. this saves the hogwan from rushing and getting someone else, recruiter fees, roundtrip airfare, etc. they can take their time and maybe find a teacher locally while i fill in during their search. |
