Im confused; I assumed that since we are a seemingly educated community, experiencing an exotic culture firsthand, we might also share similar beliefs when it comes to racial bigotry.
Recently I have read a thread titled " Airport security power trippers", in which the OP begins by decrying the abusive power of a TSA screener, but eventually adds
OP wrote: |
the security mama I dealt with was foreign, which was another thing that rubbed me the wrong way |
&
In " the negatives about interracial relationships", the OP offers up biased opinions in place of facts, saying outright
OP wrote: |
I'm racist/racialist. |
While I value everyones freedom of expression, comments and opinions like the ones appearing in the threads above seem out of place considering this is a forum dedicated to ESL teachers living in Korea.
So, WTF? Let's all try to play nice.

I think it is good that those two posters introspected and realized that they had prejudices. |

Hmmm. Mills, I seem to remember not that long ago you were wondering why Canadians were discriminating against you in the job hiring process. You sounded to have quite a lot of prejudices against Canadians in that post. I'm not quite sure how that's so different. |

You are refering to Anti-American Canadian?, where I talk about growing-up near/visiting Canada often and never having any bad experiences with Canadians... the title of the post itself was meant to be incongruous.

Obviously sarcasm doesn't translate well into text. I'm not trying to pick a fight with Canadians, I was making-light of the situation. |

Yes, you did say something to the effect of what you said above in that previous thread. But you also said this:
"Summary: Canadians, it is not cool to label people. Especially when youre a group of pasty, beer drinking, hockey playing, pancakes smothered in maple syrup eating second-class citizens living in Americas northernmost state."
Enough said. |

Sorry, Mills, I don't think there's a corner on this planet where you can escape from that sort of thing.
I talked to a person who lived in Berkeley, California, which is reputed to be the nation's liberal capital. She found many White parents who wouldn't let their children play with Black children.
Even your compatriots in a foreign country cannot offer you a respite. I talked to a person who had travelled to Paraguay. She told me about a foreign women's club called "Amigas de Paraguay." The club performed good deeds for the country, but most of the members wouldn't let their children play with Paraguayan children. |

I've already responded to this. That's what I meant about sarcasm not translating well into text. Please read the thread.
I don't understand your argument in relation to this thread. I am concerned about the racist tone of some recent posts... how is does a sarcastic comment I made about nationality flaw my ability to recognize racism? |

There's been some interesting research in the states recently that is showing that republican voters show a statistical tendency to be anti black people, while democrats do not. |

The topic of your post is about prejudism. Those were some pretty prejudicial thoughts you had there. Prejudism is the root of racism.
So when you say such prejudicial things about Canadians, I would say that it does indeed flaw your ability to recognize racism, which is close to the same thing.
I'm not saying I'm perfect either though...I've said some pretty prejudicial things about Americans on this board too. But I'm also not starting a thread telling everyone to stop all the prejudism when I know I'm guilty of it myself. I'm sure we all are to some degree. |

Huh? Mr. Mills never said anything about "prejudism". He clearly stated that it was about "racial bigotry" (his words) Read the OP again.
Canadians are not a race and making light-hearted sarcastic remarks about Canadians is worlds apart from deliberated racism. |

I turned up a surprising number of these:

The topic of the entire thread (the one you click on to open it up) is "What's up with the prejudice?" That's what I meant. The fact that the OP used that as the title and then spoke about racism in itself shows that they are closely linked.
I know Canadians are not a race...but what I am saying is that some of the same thought that goes into the kind of prejudicial views Mills expressed is also used in racist thought.
It all boils down to things like education, misunderstanding and lack of open-mindedness. We're all guilty of it, like it or not. Me included. Maybe by the time I'm 80 I'll have informed, first-hand opinions of every race and nationality on the planet, but I doubt it....even if I try really hard.
I don't think this sort of thought is just confined to race or nationality. It's also class-based. I'm sure we all have preconceived thoughts about poor people or rich people. Rich people have preconceived thoughts about middle class people. No one is immune to this stuff. It's human nature. |
