My boss thinks I am going to be capable of working 4 hours after having 2 wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow.
Short of spitting blood all over the students, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around a bona-fide slave driver?
He is being very nice at the moment and has offered to pay for the operation etc...this is obviously making it even harder to refuse. 
Anyone had any similar experiences? |

I'm always amazed by what Korean employers expect out of sick employees.
I lost my voice for about a week and even had a note from a doctor saying that I shouldn't be working until I recovered. Despite my doctor's warnings that I could permanently damage my vocal cords if I tried to talk, they still expected me to teach. They gave me a Korean helper in the class to project my whispers...but I really should have been at home recovering like the doctor told me to.
So I'm not surprised they're making you teach. The world will end if they don't at least have the white monkey in the class...even if they have to prop you up. Parents will complain and that would be the end of the world.

| Heck, I was able to get out of an entire exam period back in second year uni for just that reason. Does he flog you if you come in late? There is a lot of things I like about Asia, but the work ethic is not one of them. |

I would suggest not letting him pay for it that way you won't feel so guilty. Although it is expensive isn't it?  |

You should have a clause in your contract for situations like this. They usually want you to bring a doctors note verifying why you cannot work. I have this in my contract. He has to follow through on this, or it's a breach of your contract.
You should attach a doctor's note stating why you cannot work, how long you should be out of work, and a contact number. |

Really, it's not like having one's "real" teeth extracted.
Wisdom teeth are not usually a problem (although I accept they can be if impacted etc).
I have had three of mine out, on three separate occasions, and in each case went straight back to work. |

Not me, had 4 out all at once, and the last one was the hardest the doctor had ever done (in over 20 years). I was out (especially due to the pain killers) for 5 days, I seriously couldn't do anything it hurt so much (and I'm not a wimp either). |

Is there any way you can have them pulled on Saturday so you can have the weekend to recover? As long as your teeth aren't seriously impacted 48 hours should be plenty of time to recover. That's what I did, and I was fine by Monday morning.
If you can't wait, I'd say refuse to go to work the next day, but pay for your own operation and expect to lose a day's pay. When I had two teeth pulled here with no insurance it cost a little less than W200,000 including meds. |
