Are there some things that should not be talked about or is everything carte blanche?

What should the line be when something is held sacred in society?

I dont think there should really be anything too sacred to be out of the realm of satire. Therefore I think the muslims went WAY overboard. Its sort of funny as the amount of racist crap in Muslim media about Christians and Jews makes this little thing with the cartoons seem so trivial. Its hypocrisy at its worst. And whats funniest is that their reaction shows that the cartoons were correct in how they depicted Islam.

Exact-a-mundo! They could just as easily proven their path to be one of peace, tolerance & understanding
( which is what the Muslims who aren't rioting and raging are showing ).

Bear in mind, the cartoons first came out in September.

The world can largely thank the efforts of some FIREBRAND clerics who seized upon their publication for the violence we currently see transpiring.

Excellent.

These are my Mother's words on the subject. Why the am I telling you all what my Mom thinks? Because she's a lefty and has worked with and taught Muslims for 20 years. She's qualified to comment. Trust me, if my mother - PC lefty that she is - says the following, the Muslims are bang out of order.

Ok, here we go....

The world can't go *beep*-footing around Islamic issues forever. What if Catholics rose up at every cartoon or suggestion that is made about Jesus? They'd never get on with ordinary life. I wonder why Muslims feel so threatened and can't take it all with a degree of humour or just ignore it like the rest of the world's religious do when their religions are ridiculed? It's just another excuse for Muslims to feel persecuted and a good reason to have a jolly good march, shake fists and stamp on a few flags somewhere and shout insults at the West. (I'm feeling grumpy this morning.)

Oh, my god, where are the religious police? I blasphemed! Did it offend anyone? If so, I'm sorry.

think grown up people know how to behave. For example, there's a religious chap at school here who is the only one who has gone out of his way to make me feel welcome. I don't like his religion, but if it motivates him and reminds him to think of others, that's great, whatever does it for you. I admire and respect that. There is no way I would say 'Christ on a bike' near him, however, because I know it would offend him, therefore, I am excercising some restraint. That is my personal choice.

The media exist to pull out issues and discuss and often to provoke a discussion. If in the meantime, they offend the religious right, then the religious right should ignore it as John probably would if I did take the lord's name in vain near him. If it offends Catholics, Jews, Buddists, ignore it. We must be able to discuss issues like sensible adults. The muslims throw the rattle out of the pram at the least thing and threaten dire consequences to the West. Most of those protesting won't have seen the real cartoons anyway, and many had been told that the cartoons depicted Mohammed shagging an animal, which of course is not true. Someone out there is determined to make an big thing of so-called insults to Islam in order to cause real trouble. It is a pity that the Islamic population can't see that they are being taken for a ride.

My Mum talks sense. The only thing missing from her thesis is the need to put all concerned into an industrial incinerator.

You mum is spot on.

A total overreaction by some moronic islamic types.

There are some interesting pictures on the BBC, some of the pictures are pretty shocking. If the lunatics in the Islamic community hate the freedoms we have in Europe then they should bugger off elsewhere.

Idiots in some countries are dying over this, they need to calm down a bit. The problem with Islam is with the extremists, some of them are bloody nutcases and make the Korean protestors who set themselves on fire and cut off their fingers over trivial 'slights' look like reasonable people.

Extremists who preach hate should be convicted and sentenced to the fullest extent of the law.

The anti semitic tone of many extremist Islamic media is much worse than the more mellow satirical cartoons published in Denmark and France.

I would have to agree with most of the above statements. It may have been insensitive to print the cartoons, but the furor over it has in no way benefited the image of Islam any better.

Haha that was my favorite too.

I agree with what everyone else has said. Those extremists are doing much more disservice to the name of Islam than some cartoons. Ignorant, immature and dangerous reaction.

Indeed, your mother makes a great deal of sense. Cheers to your mother being a cognizant human being, and jeers to all the zealots in the world.

(That's my opinion of course.)

it's one of those topics you need to be careful about. personally i think some minorities went a little overboard. at the end of the day it is unfortunate that we have people like nick griffin ( b.n.p) but if our legal system is going to take him to court for instigating racial hatred then surely some of these protesters need to feel a simlar wrath.it's things like this that play straight into the hands of racist groups on both sides of the spectrum.they should not be given the time of day, media coverage or more excuses to spout more crap..
by the way the fool dressed in a suicide bomber's harness in london has publicly apologised...after the sun started a campaign of hatred against him. maybe the police not the tabliods should have put pressure on him. christ, we could be here all day on this one!!!
allah akbar and shalom!

Because it goes to the heart of the mater. And this is what the cartoons were trying to bring up, among other things. Self censorship when it comes to Islam. Islam is probably the most hateful religion in the world today. The amount of hatred in Islamic media is appaling yet because of this self censorship no one really criticizes Islamic media or Islam. I think its realy time to view Islam for the hateful religion it is. It is an appaling religion that preaches hatred, violence, repression of human rights. Did the cartoons go overboard? I really dont think they did. But even if they did, it is much healthier to publish them than to repress them.

I would not call Islam a hateful religion. That Islamic societies today are filled with hate is coincidental. North Korea pumps out plenty of hateful propaganda as well.

It is the repressive nature of Arab countries that is producing this violent outbreak; it is a pressure valve for people who can't vent their anger at their own governments. There are plenty of majority-Muslim countries where there has been little if any reaction.
