I grew up a Seahawks fan, probably because I was in the nearby Canadian province of B.C. but I always said they looked cool, had the nicest jerseys.
But the jerseys these days (as I see today for the first time in years) are so UGLY. As a fan of blue, that blue has to be about the worst shade/tone I've ever seen. And also the jersey's are plain.
And the players have blubber hanging out everywhere like a sumo wrestler (effect of my living in Korea I guess).
3-0 after the first quarter on a silly looking field goal.
I have changed, for sure, and the Superbowl doesn't look like much any more. I feel like I've lost my childhood eyes and am seeing the game for the first time. All those players falling down, ball carriers stumbling, rolling. Not a good aesthetic.
I can understand why 95 % of the world's peoples haven't taken to the sport much.
This one live game a year is more than enough for me.

The Super Bowl is a bloated, over-commercialized, over-hyped bit of pedantry that borders on self-parody. 3 seconds of action at time, five replays of a player running forward two yards, no crowd atmosphere inside the ground. I think it's telling when one of the major talking points of the biggest NFL match of the year is the anticipation of what ads will be shown.

Yeah, all over, but now the interesting time of the year for hockey and basketball s coming up and spring camps will be opening for baseball next month and Tiger is on a big roll again. It's all good. Oh yeah, and there's some kind of nancy tournament going on in Germany later this year so all the Zeropeans can get together and fight each other in the stands.
Check out all the superbowl ads here

but see, you knew that the World Cup's is on this year- I haven't got a frigging clue what the deal is for the rest of the US sports calendar.
The World Cup finals are a two week long, truly global sporting event- the Superbowl is a regional advertising opportunity. |

Great link with the Super Bowl ads, Hack.
FedEx's Caveman and Budweisers' Clydesdale streaker got my vote.
Both in the first quarter. |

That, and an opportunity for 10 minute versions of the national anthem, players crotchgrabbing, mugging it up for the cameras and for lame chants of "We're number 1."
Excitement galore. I had nothing better to do this morning and actually watched it. Clocked in at a mere 4 hours 25 minutes.
The CL final from last year paled in comparison, I tell you. |

Not being a Brit waxing poet, but from downunder, I find it highly amusing that three of the most popular games in the States (actually, did they all originate the USA, might explain a few things); basketball, baseball, and yeah, that big man of a game gridiron or American football, all funny enough, have substantial timeouts.
Where is the huff and puff in that?
Also, can't seem to keep track of the players, so many of them.
Bloated egos and bloated puffing faces seem to be a regular sideline gaze. Those guys just can't seem to get enough rest...
As for those moronic coaches with lockjaw from gum addiction, the sideline is a bigger circus than whats happening on the field> |

Vitriolic bickering over the legitimacy and advantages one sport has over another is the new Canada vs. USA, it appears.
I think any true sports fan admires the finer points of all of the sports mentioned here. It's a shame that nationalistic prejudices, ignorance, and close-mindedness prevent some folks from appreciating the greatness of certain sports, be they football, football, Aussie rules football, or, hell, even curling.
(Hey! I think there's a really neat analogy somewhere here!)

Well, being a Canadian and a fan of the game of football, I too struggled through watching this game.
Actually truth be known the USA had nothing to do with the beginning of football. The game originated north of the border, furthermore the Grey Cup ( canada's version of the superbowl ) is actually the oldest sporting trophy of all North American major sports (those being football, baseball, hockey and basketball).
Speaking both as a Canadian and an individual that took part in the Winnipeg Blue Bombersprofessional football camp (although I was cut and never saw a regular season game), The Canadian game is so much better, there are many differences that make it more exciting and high scoring.
I think the only good thing about the NFL is the fact that they are the only major sports league in the world ( I know of ) that has revenue sharing between all teams and that seems to create and equal economic base. This allows the small market teams like seattle and pittsburgh to compete with larger markets such as NY, LA, Chicago, miami, dallas etc.
Its just too bad that the video replay of Roethlisbuergers TD to make it 7-3 was not overturned. As a result of it standing the momentum turned and I think the Hawks were shortchanged. Absolutley no way in any world that football crossed the goal line before he was downed.
Anyhow, it managed to occupy my time for a few hours. Make way for the Olympics and the NHL playoffs. |

Football
- Homoeroticism in...
- Oddball Canadian Rules...
Actually, as a former Seattlite, I'd think most Seattle people were just happy Seattle made it to the Super Bowl. Let Pittsburgh deal with the post game riots.
The Super Bowl is only fun insofar as it's a great overview of everything that's reached the lowest common denominator that year in America. Most of it is embodied in the half time show. Want to know what Americans find the least challenging and least offensive? Watch the half time show.
What I hated in Canada was the channel substitution. Most of the time I don't mind watching Canadian commercials over American commercials (save for when I'm living in Windsor. How are Toronto ads going to help me when Detroit ads will?), but when the Super Bowl is on, you freakin' want to see these amazingly over hyped commercials. |

It didn't have to cross the goal line completely. It only needed to break the plane, ie. if it even barely scraped the plane of the white line at the front of the end zone (and it looked to me that it did, barely), it's a touchdown.
Besides, the "what ifs" are moot, because it wasn't a 4th down possession, and hence the Steelers would have easily QB sneaked (QB snuck?) it in on the next play.
The Steelers didn't so much win the game (though, give credit where credit is due, they played a heck of a game), as the Seahawks lost it by shooting themselves in the foot and failing to make critical plays.
PS - how's about some ESL Cafe love for Hines Ward, Super Korean?
