| Am. football does not require great fitness of all it's players. However, in terms of toughness, nothing else even comes close. |
That's total bollocks. What about rugby? You get the same hits but none of the bs helmets and pads they wear in American football. |

I'd never watched a soccer game before coming here. But it was on the tube at all my favorite bars,
and my roommate had played in college. He taught me the basics.
World Cup 2002 made me a fan. The best month of my life. Sure, I've had better times, but never for an entire month.
Funny we're still seeing reruns almost 4 years later here. |

Soccer's a great sport but it does have many issues...cheating and diving being prominent. I can understand why neutrals or people who aren't in to soccer making those objections because those same objections are raised by die-hard fans of the game.
One important aspect in Soccer is pride and patriotism. When you're young, you support your local team (usually, ideally), your town or city's team (one of them if there are more than one) and it's firmly part of the culture of European countries. Other countries too, of course, but I'm unqualified to comment. That's why stuff like Roma vs Juventus, Manchester United vs Liverpool, Barcelona vs Real Madrid...are so special and IMO unparalleled in other sports. Soccer is more than a sport. It's part of culture, part of history, full of pride and patriotism and territory, like war or politics, rivalry beyond that of mere sport.
Many people in North America, even though there are many Soccer fans there now, aren't able to appreciate this aspect. |

Not surprisingly, a low-scoring poll.
No matter how many threads are started on this topic, it will NEVER be decided - just like a good soccer match I guess. Shoot out. hmph! |

Nope. Rugby's a good, tough game, but it doesn't have a 100 kilo guy running the 40 in in 4.8 seconds and then launching himself at another guy. Everybody comments on the equipment, but before that equipment came about people were getting killed. |

I quite agree. |

That would be called rugby league, as opposed to rugby union. Its the 13 a side form of the game played predominantly in Australia, Northern England, PNG and in pockets of France. Defensive and Attacking lines are 15-20 metres apart and even guys in the backline can be 100 kgs plus. No pads, just bone on bone. I appreciate the skill and ferocity of American football, but for sheer balls and all hard-4ssedness, nothing beats this. Wait till May-June when the annual state of origin series is played between Queensland and New South Wales and tell me I am wrong, I dare you. |

I always wondered what you look like. Now I know, minus the good looks.
What's your game, hack? Don't tell me...hockey, right? That sport that;s played in USA-Lite and nowhere else? The rest of the world is wrong, but hack is right. I think I'd actually rather see Hack's face in real life than watch hockey.
Winnipeg vs Edmonton...a mouth-watering fixture. |

No vote from me.
Soccer is a global sport, I won't deny that. Its different than football. Actually I think the proper name for soccer should be football (as it is for most of the world).
As for football (American you say, Wow america is a big place including north america, central america and south america, be specific, if you mean USA say it ) This is a pet peeve of mine one actually that I brought up in class today, it seems if you are not from North, Central or South America, you refer to America as USA. Lets get a tad bit more precise.
Anyhow, the question is soccer, it seems some people think its the only global sport!!!!!!! Why so folks.
LETS SEE GLOBAL SPORTS hmmmmmmmmm
Soccer
Basketball
tennis
table tennis
volleyball
track and field
golf
bowling (if you count that)
crickett
rugby
and likely a half dozen more that I can't think of
One of the things that makes soccer so common around the world is that it is very inexpensive to play...........
All you need IN MOST COUNTRIES is desire, thats it NOTHING MORE, sure in wealthy countries you have the expensve shoes and tricked out uniforms and admin fees
BUT
If you did a survey of all people who played soccer I would guess, a hypothesis only folks is that 79% of people who participate in the game soccer world wide spend next to ZERO on outfitting themselves to play or a very niminal fee involved.
Thats not to say I dislike the game, I played it for 12 years back in Canada
Are they well conditioned athletes???? Yes cardio wise for sure.
Are they the most gifted athletes????? Certainly not
my 2 cents |

THe problem here is that most of the people here that are not from USA or Canada, have absolutely no idea how to play hockey, because for most of them, just skating is probably a challenge.
Why don't more countries play hockey? They can't afford it. On average in Canada, the price for one kid to play hockey is probably $1,500 just for equipment and ice time, and that is really on the cheap side. If the kid plays for any kind of travelling team, triple or quadruple those numbers. Keep on doing that every year, and it really adds up in the end. Soccer is actually the most widely played sport in Canada. Why? It costs like $40 for the whole year.
You talk about the passion that people feel for soccer. Go to Canada and I guarantee that passion is matched or exceeded by a large number of people by how they feel about hockey. |

Hmmm..... a 1/2 way decent post from Spin. You didn't call me some juvenile name for a change. What's wrong with you?
No, football American style is my game. I played it all through high school and uni and even had dreams of turning pro but alas, reality set in. I did try soccer but missed the contact so got involved in rugby instead as my other sport. But after I broke my jaw I just stuck to football where at least I was protected by equipment.
Sure I like hockey-I'm a Canadian and again there is contact at an amazingly high speed. I'm sure if you had grown up with these sports you too would prefer them because you strike me as someone who likes contact. Soccer players carry on like they have been shot if they are fouled. I learned in football to take my lumps and get even-not cry about it. And that's why I hate soccer. The world loves soccer because it is an easy and cheap sport to play. It's looked on in Canada as the sport you put your kid in if he/she can't play anything else.
BTW- Winnipeg hasn't had a NHL team for years and the US has 3x as many NHL teams as Canada. If you're going to take shots at a sport at least have some facts on hand. Ever tried skating? Probably not or you would have respect for how difficult hockey is.
Finally, you are showing some major ignorance by calling Canada USA lite. You are showing the fact that you have never been here or probably the US for that matter or you would know how inaccurate that assessment is. |

I've been to the USA three times, but never to Canada. What's the point, when you can just go to the USA and experience the real thing?
That said, whilst I really like America, it's sports are crap. |
