This is absolutetely the best thing that has happened in a long, long time. It's time to quit pretending the gulf between civilizations doesn't exist and confront them head on. If they wanna start WWIII over some cartoons, so be it. Let's get it on. It's high time something tangible manifested itself into clearly defining the problems facing the Muslim issue. If they want a war, let them have it. If they want us the wipe them and their little god off the face of the earth, then let's appease them. I am not Christian, and I hate what Christians did during the crusades, but we are supposed to be living in modern, rational times. The intransigence of Christians today can be easily dismissed as innocuous ranting by fools and greedy scavengers. The Muslim position is much more serious. I just wish I could be cyrogenically frozen and woken up 400 years from now and read the history books about how WIII started over some cartoons.

World War III? Dude, the most belligerent thing that's happened so far is a couple of empty embassies getting burned down in countries that aren't exactly known as pacifist bastions to begin with. And as for this overblown boycott: spare me the weepy violins. I'm old enough to remember self-righteous Europeans bellowing into their megaphones about the need to boycott Canadian fish because of how awful Canadian fishermen were treating the cute little seal pups. And I sure as hell don't recall any Europeans running "buy Canadian" campaigns to help the fishermen make up lost revenue.

I assume then that you meant "World War III" as an exaggerated description of some coming confilct between Islam and the west, which you do beleive will happen. What I'm saying is that the importance of these cartoons, morally and politically, is way overblown.

Threatened Norway pressman defends right to offend
By John Acher
Tue Feb 7, 4:40 PM ET

OSLO (Reuters) - The head of Norway's press association, whose life has been threatened by Muslims angered by satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, said on Tuesday the right to offend others was crucial to freedom of expression.

Amid spiraling unrest over the images, Per Edgar Kokkvold, Secretary-General of the Norwegian Press Association, told Reuters in an interview he was unafraid and would continue to defend the right to publish offensive material.

Danish film examines tensions with Muslim immigrants
By Claire Watson and Mike Collett-White

BERLIN (Reuters) - For the director of a new film exploring the tensions between Danes and Muslim immigrants, the row over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad first published in Denmark should not have come as a complete surprise.

Annette Olesen's "1:1" was conceived long before the caricatures, which have angered Muslims who view any portrayal of the Prophet as blasphemous, appeared in a Danish publication before being repeated in several other European countries.

But the 40-year-old from Copenhagen, who brought her film to the Berlin Film Festival, saw clear links.

"Watching the film again last night ... was very strange, because I think there is a parallel feeling between my little film, and these characters, and the crisis," she told Reuters in an interview late on Monday.

"I think something happened to the Western world and America after 9/11 ... and there's a certain loss of innocence. We were very interested in seeing how that affected people in the street and how that has affected small communities."

The low-budget film, which Olesen says is principally about fear, is set on a Danish housing estate where 16-year-old Mie and her boyfriend Shadi are a model of interracial integration, uniting Danish and Palestinian families respectively.
