Why don't more countries play hockey? They can't afford it. On average in Canada, the price for one kid to play hockey is probably $1,500 just for equipment and ice time, and that is really on the cheap side. If the kid plays for any kind of travelling team, triple or quadruple those numbers. Keep on doing that every year, and it really adds up in the end. Soccer is actually the most widely played sport in Canada. Why? It costs like $40 for the whole year.
You talk about the passion that people feel for soccer. Go to Canada and I guarantee that passion is matched or exceeded by a large number of people by how they feel about hockey. |
I dont need to go to Canada ...I am bored rigid on a daily basis by the the grey people from that country about how passionate they are about hockey. |

My problem isn't that the sport isn't tough enough, it is that the players aren't. I can't stand it when two guys are running for the ball, one guy accidentally breathes on the other player, and then this player than proceeds to act like he was hit with a shot-gun and then rolls around on the ground for a while, then realizes nobody is looking at him , whines about getting no whistle, and gets up and is completely fine, and realizes his ACT didn't work this time. So, if he just waits one minute, he can do the whole act again and maybe get a whistle. So, I guess my problem is that the players need to grow some balls and act like a man.
That is really my ONLY beef with the sport which I otherwise really enjoy watching on tv, but everytime someone does that, I can't help but cringe and want to punch the player in the face. |
Rugby owns both of these sissy sports. |

I've grown to like soccer since I've lived in Korea but well, I have to say the low-scoring nature of the game is a turnoff to many in the United States, esp. the German or Italian varieties. And the penalty shootout is also a HUGE turnoff as well.
I also don't see soccer growing in stature in the United States anytime soon despite the hundreds of thousands of kids playing the game and the "soccer mom" phenomenon. |

What's with the people on this thread saying hockey is played only in Canada or the US? Take a look at the NHL rosters and you will see that about 50 percent are native Canadians, 15 percent Americans, and the other 35 percent are Europeans. Lots of Russians, Swedes and Chechs.
Anyway, soccer is pretty lame. It's too bad because I like the concept of it, but it would benefit a lot by taking a look at hockey. (No, I am not Canadian). Fewer players, a much faster moving game, play behind the net (that would be cool in soccer) and much less of that excitement-killing offsides garbage. I like the blue line way of determining offsides so much more. Soccer players get plenty of arm excercise by raising their arms in an attempt to get the officials to call offsides every freaking time they get beat.
Soccer is popular to play because all you have to do is run around a lot without falling down...wait, actually falling down a lot is a plus if you can be trained to clasp your ankle and writhe. It's perfect for all the left over kids who are not tall enough to play basketball, strong enough to play football/rugby/wrestling etc. and not fast enough to run track.
It's popular among fans because so many of them are nationalistic morons. Take away the whole nationalism and it would be like swimming, or speed skating-popuar during the Olympics, but not so much in non-nationalistic venues. |

We already have this- it's called 5-a-side football and is fun to play, but nowhere near the spectacle as a spectator sport. Play both, then watch both- tell me I'm wrong.

Like soccer okay. Not much scoring. Hate the DRAMA...oh he brushed me....fall down writhe on the ground. Oh no penalty? Hop back up and start playing. If you ain't bleeding from an artery or a bone isn't showing get your butt up and play. They do have great endurance but then so do ballet dancers and marathon runners.
I really have gotten into rugby. GO ALL BLACKS! Now there is a sport I can get into. Scoring, hitting, blood and guts and dear gawd (ladies point of view here) Men built like the proverbial brick *hit house.
Hockey oh yeah baby. Give guys big sticks to hit each other with now thats entertainment. It can be low scoring but there is always the possibility of "blood on the ice"! Woo hoo. Lots of action.
I really am not that fond of pro football. However I am a Husker! Go Big Red...for the non-footballers that is the University of Nebraska. On game day 80,000 people dressed in red fill a stadium in a state that has just over 1.7 million people. Like the college stuff but pro ball sort of sucks to be honest. 
All that being said I like that there are more soccer teams in schools and after school programs in the U.S.A. It is a sport more people can play. Gives more women a chance to get involved in competitive sports and it is great EXERCISE.

The game would be too easy if there was no offside rule. Indeed, the offside rule changed radically in recent years (you can now be a mile offside yet 'inactive' and then score a valid goal when onside) because the game was too easy with the old offside rule. All the defenders had to do was all move forward as a unit and catch the attacker offside. Bingo! The changes sorted that little loophole out.
I once formally taught the offside rule to a bunch of women as part of a course I did. They got it! The offside rule is not difficult and not garbage. It's an essential feature of the game. The problem with offside, however, is that it's difficult to monitor consistently and valid goals get disallowed whilst invalid goals are given. That's all part of the fun though. After a soccer game, the discussions involve "that goal wasn't legitimate", "that penalty was a poor decision", "he should've been sent off for that dangerous challenge". By contrast, the after-game comments in American Football are "he played a great game". Boring. No controversy. No passion. Just a load of blokes clattering into one another for a few hours. Dreadful shower. I don't like Hockey because I can never see where the puck is - and considering the puck is the most important object in the game that's rather a drawback. However I prefer it to American Football and Baseball infinitely. I'm not being anti-America because I'M NOT ANTI-AMERICA AT ALL but I think its sports suck.
Generally, we English, I think, side with the Americans over our European counterparts - we speak the same language and we have many cultural things in common like Rock and Roll. But there's a divide when it comes to sport. And Soccer - believe me - will get popular in the States before American Football/Baseball gets popular in England. It will never be popular in England because we think it sucks nuts. Sorry guys. Don't have a fit over it - we're still your friends and allies. We'll continue giving you John Lennon and Pink Floyd whilst you give us Nirvana and The Doors. But sport? Never. |

Oh, this thread was about popularity? I thought it was about the merits of soccer as a sport. Vanilla is the most popular ice cream flavor. And soccer is very vanilla. So, fine, it's popular. So is Adam Sandler.

How predictably unclever of you to jump on wrestling and rugby rather than American football and basketball because I see far more people wearing jerseys from those two sports than soccer. Oh, and it doesn't matter anyway. Your entire argument seems to be popular=good. If you believe that abot everything, I truly pity you.

No, it explains why it is seemingly popular on a world level. There are certainly some countries where soccer is very popular at the local level (western Europe, South America), but there are also plenty of countries that don't really care too much about soccer until it become a "national pride" thing.
