Think back to when you were first deciding whether or not to come to Korea. Now imagine that you decided against it and chose a different direction in your life. Where do you think you would be right now? What would you be doing?
I'm a bit unsure about my answer. I was fresh out of college when I decided to come here. All I knew was that I wanted to do something more interesting than a 9-5 company job and that I wasn't ready for graduate school without having some fun first. In all probability, however, I think I would have ended up spending a year in Japan or working a 9-5 job. After that, I might have headed to graduate school. If so, I would probably be living in graduate housing at a university right now. Most of my time would be spent researching obscure literary topics and worrying about essays. But I'd also be on my way to a PhD, and learning new and interesting (for me) things about literature everyday. What about you? |

If I hadn't come here in June 2001, I would've still been working for American Airlines, and I would've had to have dealt with 9/11. *Shiver* Probably still be flying, but I would've missed-out on a lot of cool experiences...
I'm so glad I'm not in customer service anymore. *shivers again* |

Actually I'd be running a limousine company which I'm pretty sure was a front for the Russian mob OR working towards getting my counseling license and working with homeless young adults. I'm curious to see what comes up on this post though. |

Yep, my life probably would have gone on one of two paths if I hadn't come to Korea.
1) I'd have kept working as a paralegal for a couple more years, tolerating the soul-crushing boredom, until I'd saved enough for law school or maybe some other kind of grad school. The longer I'm away from the legal field, though, the less appealing it seems.
2) I'd have gone to Taiwan, learned Mandarin instead of Korean, and ridden a moped instead of the subway. Would I have liked Taiwan enough to have stayed for 4+ years? Perhaps I'll never know. |

Before coming to Korea, I dreamt of running a drug cartel in Columbia. I could just picture myself in a cream suit, two-toned shoes and a wide-brimmed Panama hat. I imagined I'd have a good nose for the industry. Unfortunately, by the time I'd travelled down to Panama, I realised that I was too young to grow a convincing pencil-thin moustache -a pre-requisite of the afore-mentioned attire.
Thus, I decided to come to Korea, where I have spent the last three years shaving twice daily in the hope that I will attain the facial growth of an actual Latino.
If I'd had the ability to grow one three years ago, I would probably be shooting farmers over the price of cows as we speak. |

You know, I've asked myself that question a few times in the past. Each and every time, the answer is the same....I actually shudder to think what would have become of my life if I had not come to Korea. I found love, and that's worth everything. Right? |

I would probably be majorly overweight, trapped in an unhappy marriage with two children. We had planned to start our family after I worked here for a year to raise money towards our mortgage.
I am so thankful I came here, got divorced, found myself and lost a load of weight because I was finally happy!
I'm still not ready to have babies, but I have found a wonderful partner here who I do see a strong and happy future(including babies) with. |
