I'll be bringing 2 dependants with me to South Korea and I want to maximise my chances of finding a good job. In what months do the majority of schools look to hire new teachers?

I see this is your first and only post here. Welcome to ESL in Korea!

Just about any time is a good time to find a job in Korea. I myself would not give a thought to the time of year. Every single school and institute has teachers come and go every month. There might be some tiny considerations, but they would be very tiny.

Good luck!

Gorgias is partially right.

His comment is true for Hakwon (Private institutes) jobs.

However, Public Schools and Universities do not hire all year long and their peak hiring season is now and late August.

EPIK (program sponsored by the government of Korea) hires only twice a year as well (their 2006 recruitment campaign is slated to start now).

Hakwons on the other hand hire all year long with slight peaks in late summer and late spring.

What type of job are you looking for?

What are your qualifications?

I only have a BA in anthropology and modern literature from an American University and half of a Masters in Ethnology from a French University. No teaching experience, no tefl. I'm not even blonde, which according to the posts here is a big plus. So I guess I'll jump on any job offered as long as it's in the 2 million won range with a housing allowance. With our baby, we'll feel cramped without 2 bedrooms.
Do the public schools hire as many brunette newbies as the hokwans?

I don't think you should worry about your hair color as affecting your employment chances.

You should not however take any job that comes along for 2.0 million won. You should research the place (Korea) before applying, then choose if you want to use a recruiter or not and then consider each offer you get according to what you feel is necessary. Then again, you also have to remember that as a newbie, you will get newbie contract offers.

Basic job profile for a newbie has to be around this:

2.0 million won per month for 120 teaching hours (i.e. 30 hrs per week)
No weekend work.
Spelled out overtime rate
Make sure the contract includes clauses on pension and medical coverage.
In your case non-shared housing. Some schools may be open to you bringing your baby and provided a two bedroom appartment. However, you may have to get a non-housing contract with a housing allowance and find your own place. I know many schools will just not consider a teacher with dependants as they consider that a hassle of somekind. Some schools also like to provided shared accomodations where teachers share an appartment. If you apply to such a school, they might have simple financial reasons not to pursue employing you.

Anyway, you should be able to find a job that suits you.

Best of luck out there!

Any of you high school/uni teachers recall when your first day of work for the fall term was?
What do you mean by 'school'? Hogwan, public school, uni?

Generally you can get a job any time of the year.

Initially I wanted to work in Japan but had to cross that off my list given that all of the agencies I inquired into offer exclusively shared housing. I find it strange that they wouldn't want teachers with families, given that in my cultural logic, someone with dependants should be more desirable because more stable, less able to walk out on a night's whim.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I'm glad you guys jabber out there.
Every time I look at Dave's Korean job board I see positions advertised for couples. That won't work for me, because my wife is Korean [not a NATIVE English speaker even though she has a PhD in sociolinguistics] but it could get you a family-sized accomodation in Korea.
