Anyone got one?
Had one?
Things to look for, things to avoid?
Comments, advice?
I've decided I missed having the Superbowl on the projector, but maybe I can remedy this oversight in time for the Olympics.
I'm not considering USB, just pcmcia. |

So far it looks like it's a toss up between-
KWorld NBTV 100 PCMCIA CardBus (with proprietary s/w),
AverMedia AVerTV MTV cardbus (with AVer TV PVR s/w),
Lifeview LifeVideo To-Go Cardbus (with Ulead DVD movie factory and Ulead Videostudio s/w)
Based on price features and (scant) reviews, I'm leaning towards the Kworld card, but does anyone have experiences they'd like to share about the Ulead software?
I've heard of it before but never used it.
Is it good? Great? crap? okay? |

I bought a PCI card with a TV tuner about a year ago and I can't recall seeing those names when I went shopping. That likely means nothing however. |

You are right, it means nothing, because PCI and PCMCIA are 2 entirely different formats.
But you could share your experiences using the tuner card software, things you had trouble with and found solutions for, etc.
Anyway, I've gone with the Kworld card. cheapest of the bunch, and had the most feedback. Company is Taiwanese, and their website looks like they had English lessons from Joe Thanks or maybe the guy who teaches LG's cellular marketing division.
I expect to be both highly amused and somewhat perplexed by the documentation accompanying my purchase.

Yea, sure. The idea of the efficacy these cards is appealing to me so I had one before along time ago like, 1997. In 2005, I "needed" a TV set and I'm cheap so again, the idea of the card was appealing. I shopped on eBay, then at Yongsan and I pretty much saw the same models/companies. There is a website devoted just to these card and I checked that site out. Then I found all of the models at Yongsan (3 or 4) and picked out the model with best review. It was the 2nd most expensive but they were all under $50. I bought the item from the store with prettiest salesbabe. I installed it and I was amused by it for a week. Then I picked out my favorite shows and that gave me 2 hours of TV each week. I'm usually out on Sat nite so I recorded SNL. The record function is really handy. I recorded a few other TV shows then I just lost interest and I haven't used in in 9 months or a year. I can't remember. Its just frickin TV. The card works fine, my cable package is really bad and doesn't inspire me to watch.
This info won't help you. I'm sorry. |

Not specifically, but it's reassuring to hear that you bought one quite cheaply and were satisfied with the performance. I don't know how well it will work for me since I want to throw the image up on the big screen, but I expect it will be worth every cent just through transferring my videotapes to digital. Got some wedding video and some videos that I have not been able to find digitally (e.g. Natioanl Geographic's "Jewels of the Caribbean Sea", parts of which were almost literally filmed in my front yard when I lived there). |

I don't think so, and it doesn't sound like you get better picture than your tv either (unless your tv is really crappy).
You do turn your pc into a tivo, though, and depending on the software you can have multiple channels simultaneous, instant rewind etc.
check the link I provided for details.
I suspect they are a 'get what you pay for' item- the higher end for these seems to be around $500+
The pcmcia analog-only cards all seem to be low end $75-$100.
Lots of USB-based ones too. |

Looks like an interesting card. Where will you buy it? I am thinking of picking up one myself. |

I'm not in Korea, and I've looked around quite a bit and there really is only one reasonable place for me to buy one of these, www.tigerdirect.ca I expect that Tigerdirect.com ships to Korea, but I suspect that this is the sort of peripheral where being in Korea could be an advantage in terms of selection and price. |

GREAT, thanks!
Does it work with the eDonkey2000 BitTorrent plug-in, would you happen to know? [nevermind, I'll do what I always tell others to do and read the FAQs]
And somebody must have captured this from VHS because that's the only way to get it (um, unless somebody recorded it digitally from an HDTV broadcast or something... wouldn't that be sweet... )
Video Resolution: 560x416
Video Aspect Ratio: 4:3 (1.35:1)
Audio Codec: AC3
Audio BitRate: 192 kb/s 48000Hz
Audio Channels: 2
That's regular tv audio and video, isn't it?
Still, as you say, it does save me the trouble of ripping that particular video myself... |
