Hello all,

I used to live and work in Korea and I am considering returning for 6 months (trying to earn some cash for school).

I have a degree in English, TESOL cert., 3 years teaching experience (mostly in Korea) and lots of writing experience (newspapers/websites).

Since it's been awhile, I'd like any advice I can get on the possibility of 6 month contracts and whether or not it's possible to save 2 million won a month anymore. Willing to work my tail off to get it.

Also, what is the atmoshphere like there now? Are there lots of jobs open, is immigration getting tougher on privates? Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help,

TMAC

I doubt youll be able to save that much unless you work illegally. Also 6 month contracts are extremely rare. If you only want to work a short time, you would probably have to up and quit on your employer or you could get a working holiday visa - except as far as I know you can only work for a maximum of 3 months for any one employer and less all the benefits.

Hi

I just went through this with a university camp.

If you are working as a non-resident (i.e. if you are there less than one year) and if the school is doing its accounting by the book, you will be charged 22% tax on your monthly income. 2million Won minus 22% = 1.56 million Won

Just thought you should be prepared for this. It sounds as though you could get a 2.4 million or more, though, which would bring the net to 2.0 (thereabouts)

The best thing to do is to get a legal 1 year E-2 visa, and just have an unwritten agreement that you will be leaving within 6 months. Perhaps offer to pay for all or half of your Japan visa trip (if you are taking one).

Remind them that they won't have to pay you any severance, and tell them you will help them find a new teacher before you leave.

You won't have to pay all of that tax if you have a legal E-2, then just cancel it with a release letter (of course, you won't need it if you are just going home, anyway).

But you will have to pay tax (on what you claim) back home, if you are American, for example.

Do the math. 2 million won a month? When you will be LUCKY to get 2.2? That ofcourse means extra and illegal work.
