Or the owners, I'm not fussy. I suspect that whatever nice home they may end up in, these emotionally damaged wee mites will still be a menace to their poor neighbours. What does your dog do when you're out? Have you asked your neighbours? (This question is directed towards all dog owners, not just Periwinkle)

A menace? I think the world is a better place because of dogs (guide dogs, addition to a family, working dogs, hunting dogs, therapy dogs, etc.). They are useful.
I agree totally. Those are not the dogs I'm talking about.

Dude, don't get mad at the dogs in your neighborhood- it's your neighbors' fault they don't clean up the poo. It's your neighbors' fault they don't train the dogs not to bark. As for neurotic, I'm guessing that's due to in-breeding, also due to humans.`
I agree with you totally.

Have you complained to any of your neighbors?
Constantly. They don't care. They are ignorant arseholes, Koreans and waygooks alike.

Why are you living in a canine-infested neighborhood, anyway? If you chose that neighborhood- why?

Economic necessity, combined with an urgency to get a place when I first came to Seoul and my money was running out. My economic situation has since mercifully improved and I'm moving out of the Dogs' Toilet next week, yay!

Please, if you own a dog (or plan to): Be responsible and considerate, or don't bother!

I wonder why your neighbors even own dogs. My husband complained to the neighbors upstairs (sort of). He asked if they had a dog. The guy point blank lied to him in front of his son and said they didn't. Then my husband went on to say that a dog directly upstairs from us scratches at the door and whines for an extended period of time early in the morning. The guy scratches his head and says, yeah, we heard it, too. I just love the saving face thing...

Well, it's stopped, so we figure the family was dog-sitting for someone, so maybe the "do you have a dog?" question was properly answered with a "No"... Rolling Eyes

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum. When I saw this link, I definitely felt like I had to respond. I've been in South Korea for about 6 months now and I've been pretty shocked at some of the things I've seen. I'm constantly seeing abandoned dogs on the streets. Most of the time they are starving. Back home there were no shortage of Humane Societies to call in cases like this. I've inquired in my area and no one seems to know about them. How do you go about finding them? Thanks

I was in this exact boat a few months ago. To keep it short, all formal roads lead to euthenasia. What I finally did was hold out for someone who wanted to raise a dog. It took about a month of extending the feelers, but a guy stepped up and the dog is living happily now (I've seen it with my own eyes!).

One thing that helped finding a willing taker was taking it to the vet, who gave the dog a free, quick check-up for fleas and stuff like that.

Really, what area do you live in? That would have been a pretty rare sight in Seoul when I lived there, although I did find a few dogs who needed help. Maybe you could get in touch with the following organizations:

Thanks for those links!! Actually, I'm about half an hour from Suwon. It's considered more of a rural area. I guess that would explain why there are no animal shelters. There probably are quite a few in Seoul.

Some sad news about the whole thing: before taking the dog to the animal shelter, we first took the dog to the doctor, who examined her and told us that she's got cancer and there's nothing they can do for her.

I'm a bit sad about it, but honestly I don't regret what I did--though she was lonely the last few days, at least she wasn't lonely and hungry and sitting outside in the snow with a 3mm-long haircut over her whole body.
