Is this a nice city to work in? What are some of the better cities to work in?

Get down on him why don't you? Take a chill pill.

Honestly, I don't know. I hear it's really pretty over that way. I don't think there is a lot of foreigners. I met a chap over that way once. He said he liked it. Close knit community and the like.

A close knit community is something that is missing in Seoul. Coming from where I come from, I find comfort in a close knit community. I detest Seoul and the posturing that goes on up there.

Seoul is easy. Everything you want is there. There is a greater population of English speakers. Anyone who whines about living there has their hands in their pants.

If you want an interesting experience in Korea, stay out of Seoul. Give Mokpo a go, or another region centre.

Mokpo is an excellent place to live. Foreigner population=50+ I would guess. Very nice city on the water, good shopping, nice movie theatres....I think it's an ideal place to be. Access to KTX(bullet train), relatively close to Gwangju(capital of Jeollanamdo).

Posturing my ass.

You do have a point about a close-knit community; when I lived in Tonghae the foreign community (all 6 to 7 of us) huddled together for security.

I've only been to Mokpo once, but it was memorable -- a huge extended family who filled the restaurant and had been quite noisy stopped and stared at me as I exited the room where I had been eating, walked to my shoes, put on my shoes, and just as the door was closing behind me exploded again into excited chatter.

Still, even with the staring, I'm glad I put in two years outside of Seoul.

Mokpo has some nice weather throughout the year. They are making the roads wider into the city from other areas also. You have all the ferries coming and going into the harbor...the boats...not the other ferries... Very Happy
you can take one to Jeju and be in Jeju in about 4-5 hours...or China.
Mokpo is old...many old buildings especially along the harbor. Some look like the slums of....
almost no western restaurants to speak of also.
You do have clean air! Ocean breeze if that's what you like.

What about the christian community? Churches?

I also have an opportunity to work on Jeju Island. What's the better pick?

Churches? Can't help you there.

Jeju or Mokpo...6 of one...half a dozen of the other.
I think most would say Jeju. Why though?

I've recently begun my year in Mokpo and have discovered an English Worship Service at the Mokpo Cheil Presbyterian Church (in Old Mokpo not far from Mokpo station). They meet at 4:20pm on Sundays, with a friendly gathering afterwards. An interesting mix of people -mostly Korean, with the odd person from other parts of Asia and Africa.

It was by far my favorite city in in the south. Yu-dal Sun is wonderful in Spring.

I remember Mokpo as the place where most Korean 'gangpe' come from.

what is a gangpe?

the only logical translation i can come upon is "river boat". but i didn't know mokpo made river boats... any help there?

anyway, Mokpo is cool. it's incredibly windy and cool right now, but i like the relaxed feel of the city.

This is just my experiences with Mokpo. There are hordes of gangsters. The police act like children (army conscripts). The bus drivers swear when a foriegner comes on the bus (not just at me). I have to travel to that wretched city twice a year. Forgive me, but I don't like munching on dime sized dried shrimp with the shell still on that much. I would pick Jeju. You can't get any worse than Mokpo.
