|
|
Apparently, an Egyptian paper published the now infamous cartoon back in October, during Ramadan, and there was nary a peep of outrage in the "Muslim World"- Interesting.....
Sort of reminds me of the anti-Americanism whipped up here in Korea in 2002, months after the accident involving a US tank, in which 2 middle school girls were killed.

and here is the commentary by the blogger in Egypt....
His website is
http://egyptiansandmonkey.blogspot.com/2006/02/boycott-egypt.html
Guess we will have to Boycott Egypt now as well, huh?
Now while the arab islamic population was going crazy over the outrage created by their government's media over these cartoons, their governments was benifitting from its people's distraction. The Saudi royal Family used it to distract its people from the outrage over the Hajj stampede. The Jordanian government used it to distract its people from their new minimum wage law demanded by their labor unions. The Syrian Government used it to create secterian division in Lebanon and change the focus on the Harriri murder. And, finally, the Egyptian government is using it to distract us while it passes through the new Judiciary reforms and Social Security Bill- which will cut over $300 million dollars in benefits to some of Egypt's poorest families. But, see, the people were not paying attention, because they were too busy defending the prophet by sending out millions of e-mails and SMS-messages, boycotting cheese and Lego and burning Butter and the danish Flag. Let's not even mention the idiots who went the usual route of "It's a jewish conspiracy", spouted the stupid argument about the Holocaust, or went on a diatribe with the old favorite "There is an organized campaign-headed by the west and the jews- to attack and discredit Islam, and we have to defend it". They proved, once again, that the arab world is retarded and deserves no better than its leaders.
Whatever.. |

Why does it take a blogger to bring this to our attention? What are all the journalists doing?
You can't rely on the mainstream media. And because this comes from a blog there's always the slight suspicion that it's a hoax too. It sucks. |

Blogs and Wikipedia will save the world.

In 2005, the Muhammad cartoons controversy received only minor media attention outside of Denmark. Six of the cartoons were reprinted in the Egyptian newspaper Al Fajr in October 2005 without reaction[20]. January 2006 saw some of the pictures reprinted in Scandinavia, then in major newspapers of Denmark's southern neighbors Germany, Belgium and France. Very soon after, as protests grew, there were re-publications around the globe, but mostly in continental Europe.
Notable by their absence were re-publications from major newspapers in the USA[21] and the United Kingdom[22], where editorials covered the story, but almost unanimously took a stance against re-publication of the Mohammad cartoons.
Several editors were fired for their decision, or even their intention,[23] [24] to re-publish the cartoons, most prominently the chief editor of France Soir, Jacques Lefranc.
Three of the cartoons were reprinted in the Jordanian weekly newspaper al-Shihan[25]. The editor, Momani, was fired, and the publisher withdrew the newspaper from circulation. Momani issued a public apology, was arrested and charged with insulting religion.[26] Several of the cartoons were reprinted in the Jordanian newspaper al-Mehwar. The editor Hisham Khalidi was also arrested and charged with insulting religion. Both charges were dropped two days later.[27]
Al-Hurreya newspaper in Yemen was closed down after publishing some images. Owner/Editor Abdul-Karim Sabra was arrested. [28]
In Malaysia, Lester Melanyi, an editor of the Sarawak Tribune resigned from his post for allowing the reprinting of a cartoon. The chief editor was summoned to the Internal Security Ministry.[29]
In South Africa, a Muslim organization obtained an interdict from the Johannesburg High Court against several South African newspapers, preventing them from publishing the cartoons.[30] |

Yes. And there's another thing that's been bugging me- I've been reading headlines and catching news reports on the 24 hour channels and listening to anchors interview pundits and I get the impression that the entire Muslim world, all 1.2 billion or so of them, are totally aflame with righteous anger and are rioting in the streets.
But is that really the case?
I mean, how many people are actually out in the streets demonstrating?
How many are actually rioting and torching Danish embassies?
I suspect the numbers are far, far less than what we are being led to believe...
Beirut, Tehran, Khandahar... are there huge demonstrations in places like Istanbul, Cairo, Amman, Rabat, Tripoli, Dubai, Muscat?
I think Condi is right in that the whole thing is being manipulated by extremists.
But it seems to me that would also mean that the Western media is not only buying into this manipulation, they are actively fueling it.
So those in the West who seek a confrontation with Islam seem to be on the the same side of this issue as the extremists.
In other words, there are extremists on both sides pushing for confronatation and pushing moderates to either extreme.

Just come out and say it! The OP is almost as much to blame as some of the Islamic extremists! |

Actually the OP did us a great service. After all, the biggest news topic and the one that is taking up a huge amount of time on CNN are these cartoons. I was getting sick and tired of hearing non stop news about something that I was not able to see. What about the Pakistan earthquake? CNN showed us non stop film footage of the area. They did not just talk about it but not show us the actual event. So, I thank the OP for his post.
And, now that I see it, I see there are no captions to tell who it is. If in Islam they are not allowed to have images of Mohammad (sp?) then how do they know it is supposed to be him? It could also be Abu from Quickie Mart's Brother.

I think there is a cerain "conflation of events" going on in the way this issue is discussed. That is...
Quote: |
Millions of Muslims offended by the cartoons. (true)
+
Hundreds of Muslims in Beiruit and Damascus burning embassies. (right again)
+
A dozen or so Muslims in London holding up signs calling for blasphemers to be killed.
=
Millions of Muslims around the world burning embassies and calling for blasphemers to be killed.
|
(I wrote that myself, it's not a quote)
As I have argued elsewhere on this board, you can easily find similar examples of westerners overreacting to percieved slights. I mean, if you wanna talk about wanton destruction in the name of a trivial cause, it's pretty hard to beat this...
Quote: |
The surly crowds took to the streets, damaging the fashionable stores on St. Catherine Street, overturning cars and setting fires. Radio station CKVL provided moment-to-moment descriptions of the demonstration, which inspired other Canadians to venture downtown to the Forum. By 11 p.m. more than 10,000 Montrealers and 200 police were involved in the chaos. |
Anyone care to take a guess at what grave affront to humanity prompted this savage outburst from 10 000 Canadians?

The riots in the middle east are being cited as evidence that Muslims as a whole are hellbent on destroying western civilization.
When it is pointed out that Canadian hockey fans have exhibited similar behavior in living memory, you reply(through sarcasm) that Canadian hockey fans aren't hell bent on destroying western civilization. But according to the standards of proof used re: the Muslims, the Canadian hockey fans WERE hell bent on destroying western(or at least Canadian) civilization.
(I guess I should have said this earlier, but the Richard riots of 1955 are generally viewed as having been motivated in part by ethnic resentment on the part of the Quebecois against Anglo-Canadians.
Quote: |
An angered mob of 16,000 spilled from the Montreal Forum. The ensuing wave of vandalism up and down Rue St. Catherine was not caused by only those in attendance, but others joining in anger against Campbell, who represented the Anglo-domination of the NHL-and in Canada as well.

When Canadian hockey fans start decapitating schoolgorls, suicide bombing pizza parlors, hijacking airplanes, invading free countries and attempting to destroy them, then you can make a valid, real comparison. |

I thought Muslims were protesting because of 12 cartoons?
I don't think i've read about any bomb attacks, decaptiated school girls, hijacked airplanes, invaded free countries because of the cartoons. |

No, but by taking things out of context OTOH allows himself to believe and expects us to believe the absurd notion that Muslims are no more of a threat to Western civilization than a few thousand rowdy Canadian hockey fans.

That's the thing. If(as Leslie would have it) the decapitations, bomb attacks, etc. were all evidence that Muslims as a whole want to destroy western civilization, then you have to wonder why such a big deal is being made about their comparatively tepid response to the cartoons. |
