Nam June Paik is part of the canon of great 20th century artists. his lack of regard proves Swiss James is (much to my surprise) a Philistine. It's his loss that he never heard of Nam June Paik, i certainly won't loose sleep over it.
in addition to being slick and sugary sweet, Nancy Lang is successful [urgh-green monster horns pop up from my crown] because her pieces are good. it's strong work; very much "together."

A little over a year ago there was an exhibition called KOREAN-EYESED that brought together a dozen expat artists working here.
Catch the 'Korean-eyesed' Dozen

Korean Society and Culture through the Eyes of Foreign Artists
The book that resulted from the showing is still available. I bought mine at Seoul Selection down near Gwanhwamun for man won.
This is from one of the artists involved.[ |
thanks for the links Bob! i saw that impressive show, 'bought the book too. it's nice to know of others who enjoyed it as well.
it's very nice of you to share your work with the daves crowd, Rteacher. while i agree with the comment(s) that much of it is a little busy and appears transitional, in my not-so-humble opinion these two paintings really have something.

what are the dimensions?
i wonder if you've ever seen works by Mark Toby:
more
or Morris Graves?

Hey, even my mother complains that most of my artwork is too busy...
When I first really got into art - in the early '70s - I concentrated mainly on a single large wall mural which I would work and re-work in different media (mediums?) superimposing different layers of drawings and paintings that would organically morph into new creations in the same (black-lit) space...Actually, this mural - entitled "Vandalism" - was a freaky landmark that could be seen through a large picture window by passers-by to-and-from downtown Coconut Grove. (It always featured two huge eyes that kept changing expressions...)
The two works noted by "Ody" are "Cosmic Wrestling Stars" and "Smiling Cat Goddess" (unrespectively...) The former was done on the cardboard back of an art pad. I saw some smudges (ala Leonardo da Vinci and Max Ernst) that suggested forms that I started projecting and tracing onto the cardboard... I think the dimensions (dementians?) are 16 x 20 inches.
One of the dimensions of "Smiling Cat Goddess" is 30 inches - I think it's 20 x 30. Unlike "Cosmic..." (which was completed in a day-or-two) I kept transforming (and overworking?) "Cat..." It includes a layer of acrylic flourescent paints that look striking under black light...
I may try to contact the "Seoul International Visual Arts Society" to see if they're still active. They've featured some very good artists - expats and Korean - including the founder, Thomas Dembeck. They have reportedly made significant contributions to kids/orphans charities in North Korea so I would be glad to plug any events they have coming up...

ya' know, this was such a bogis response to my obviously informed comment/inquiry about your art.
i didn't say anything at the time because i was like, "whatever" but i've been getting increasingly annoyed by all your religious dribble since. i find you to be very shallow. why wouldn't you comment about the artists that i refered to? their creative process was absolutely about investigating spirituality.
i call cow manure on you, Rteacher!

coming from you, this strikes me as nothing more than a hollow attempt at pretension.

| This reminds me of that train-wreck of a "Best Dave's Poster" thread. Rteacher, your self-aggrandisement isn't cute. |

Apparently, you gals've got nothin' better to do than gang up on me, eh?
Let there be no doubt, sports fans: I'm the greatest ex-pat artist currently residing in Korea. I've paid my dues, I paint the blues... (I tend to mix my metaphors... )
You talk a good game, "Ody", and I've heard from another art critic on this forum that you've exhibited your work at galleries in Seoul. If you really think that your artwork is superior to mine, why don't you accept my challenge and post your stuff on this thread? Too modest?
I didn't comment on the the work of the other artists you posted, Morris Graves and Mark Toby, because I could only vaguely remember them
from ads in Art News or Art in America (neither of which I've read in years...) They are certainly both expressive - with more-or-less meditative qualities to their work - but they sure as hell aren't currently residing in Korea (unless Toby, who died in 1976, is reincarnated as a thirty-year old ex-pat in Seoul...) I'm more impressed by the abstract work of Klee, Kandinski and Gorky. Regarding Toby's faith in Baha'i, I think it significant that it's considered (by some) to be the youngest of the mainstream religions - in my view making it more likely to contain "drivel" than what you term "dribble" - talk about mixed metaphors... - the original Vedic religion of ancient India.
Hey Kermo, Muhammad Ali's self-promotion wasn't [at first regarded as] exactly cute either when he claimed to be the greatest, but he backed it up enough to be taken seriously (at least in the ring...) Not that I'm all that serious (hell, I only won "Thread of the Year" with like three measly votes - just for amusement purposes - and most of my artwork probably sucks by most standards, my only formal training being a class in junior high...) As far as my religious beliefs go, however, I doubt that anyone can convincingly defeat them philosophically ...

for the record (and i'm flattered anyone cares), i've only ever exhibited my work in Miami (Florida), New York City, and Northern New Jersey. i certainly have never made such foolish claims as to being a superior artist.
knowledgeable i am though, and i know great art when i see it.

how many subjects can be squeezed into one paragraph?
yes i agree, your words are more accurately described as drivel. what i meant to say though, was "diarrhea".

So, you decline my challenge to post your artwork on this thread? (Lest people make "odyous" comparisons to mine ?...) I'll try to refrain from saying "put up or shut-up" because I'm sure that you're a nice person .
BTW, I've already celebrated at Disney World - having lived in Orlando for over seven years... Did I mention that I exhibited at the City Hall gallery there, and my work was noticed by an authorized Sotheby's agent (from Sweden) who sold some of my stuff on Sotheby's on-line auction site for emerging artists? When I told him (and his American wife) at their artsy villa that I thought I might be the reincarnation of Arshile Gorky, he replied that my work was better than Gorky's...(It's hard to stay humble... ) Have a nice day! |

what you think, what posters on a message board think, even what i think myself is irrelevant.

yes, i believe you have mentioned it.

On the contrary! Ali was a brilliant self-promoter. People enjoyed listening to him. Hell, they adored him.
Heard this one?

I done wrassled with an alligator,
I done tussled with a whale,
handcuffed lightnin, threw thunder in jail.
Only last week I murdered a rock,
Injured a stone, hospitalized a brick,
I'm so mean I make medicine sick. |
I like you most of the time, but I have to ask myself why you crave such meaningless titles, and challenge other people to vindicate yourself. My advice, though you haven't asked for it, is just to be who you are. Let other people crown you with laurels if they like, but don't go ripping branches off the trees.
By the way, I didn't "gang up" on you with Ody-- we just happen to agree. |

no. since "have a nice day" was taken, i pulled something else, just as meaningless, out of the air.
next time your work is on exhibit here in Seoul, i hope you'll pm me an invite.
if i can find the time to go, i'm sure i'll enjoy seeing what you're doing.

Ah-ha...Your avatar is presumably a sample of your work. It's certainly understated (minimalist?) and rather ethereal. Suggestive of a hologram effect, perhaps?
My latest avatar is from a photo of a white-board drawing I made at the last hogwan I was at. I had few classes and a lot of time on my hands. Here're a few more variations on that theme:
