I just got the word that I may be diabetic. Waiting for the blood test results today, I'm worried. Anyone here a diabetic and how did your life change? I love sugar. Chocolate and those lovely orange circus peanuts, mmm mmm. Anyway, I'd like to hear from you if you went diabetic and how it's affected your life, etc.
BTW, I am 6'0 and I weigh 170 lbs, no fat anywhere. High metabolism. (Don't know if diabetics are usually overweight??)

Do you love your extremities? How about your eyesight?
You can still have sweets, but now you will have to carefully monitor your blood sugar.
Type 2 Diabetes.
My maternal Grandfather died from complications due to diabetes... at the time of his death he was blind and both his feet had been amputated. |

From what I understand, the good news is that you can control it with diet and exercise, and meds if necessary.

| Not sure yet, doctor is supposed to call with the results of the blood test in the morning, but they never give bad news over the phone, so I'm sure I'll be waiting till friday for that face to face sit down appt. if I am diabetic. |

FALSE alarm!!
WOOO - HOOOO!!!!
I can still eat candy. Can't say how badly I was scared about this, and I'm changing my diet starting today. From now on, instead of a bag of circus peanuts and chocolate for lunch, I am eating right.
No more junk food. Thank you almighty universe for not bestowing this crap ass disease on me.

Yeah, there is an epidemic of diabetes in the U.S. right now related to how crappy the diet has become.
You live in the Southwest, right? Damn, there is some good food down there, if you cook from scratch- and avoid the frybread!  |

My mom died from it right about 2 years ago, but only after suffering the debilitating effects for a couple of decades. No limbs were amputated, but she could no longer walk up a single flight of stairs, and she was far past legally blind for 8 years before she died. She was cogent enough in the last few months to ask for hospice care, so she could die in her own bed with people who loved her in the next room. I'm glad I was able to be in the next room, just then, despite my career here, so far away from California.
Seems to be genetic tendency. I'm very thankful that most people say I resemble my father, though he died of a heart attack, and bought the farm much younger. It's quicker, from what I have seen.
One of my brothers has been diagnosed with diabetes recently. He seems to resemble mom's side of the family. Like me, he has been known to enjoy his beers, and his Jack Daniels even better, and I hope he is adjusting well to his new life without either of them ... he's a jazz musician, hangs out in bars as a livelihood, and his day job is in a tasting room at a winery in the Napa Valley. He gets a monthly bonus of a coupn worth $300 of anything made by Seagram's, and I expect he's giving as lotta bottles away to his friends right now. Hope so, anyway.
(Reminds me of a beloved English prof I had in uni, with two extreme allergies ... one, to blackboard chalk dust and the other to the dust from old books. Sometimes the universe is unkind.)
Diabetes is shit. I'm a tobacco hobbyist by choice, but I think diabetes deserves far more attention by research endeavors than cancer, because I think far more people probably die from it, or have their lives their lives crippled by it. |
