have you guys thought about how the new internet laws affect us on daves? theoretically if you work for a school and it's bad, if you write about it on here, if you name names, you could get in big trouble. efl-law has faced some issues, so be careful what you say on here. |

I don't know if that's libel or slander, but yes, in most countries if you post something bad about somebody and it's false or you have no evidence to back it up, you can get in trouble. One of the characteristics of Dave's is that it's not anonymous, and you can't post anonymously in any way, so be careful. |

The problem is that in Korea one can apparently sue for 'loss of business' or some such thing. In most countries one cannot sue if someone is telling the truth. Would that be the case in Korea?
At any rate, I think it would take a great deal of work for a Korean to sue a Waygukin for something posted on an American website. To verify identities they would need to get a US subpoena to get IP addresses, personal information given to Dave Sperling (which may be false), and records of posting. I happen to know of several accounts here that are shared, making tracking down a potential libeller all the more difficult. One can be completely anonymous. If one were to set up a sock from a PC-bang and only post at PCF-bangs there is no way that someone could accurately trace their identity. Simply put, I think we have little to worry about, and listing names and schools that show dishonesty or are grossly unprofessional is an excellent idea. |

Me too, and my boss told me that unless I could prove it I would be in a lot of legal trouble. When I posted the info it was back when we did not have to register.
Unless you have proof, don't name your school or boss when posting.
If you are confronted by your boss because it sounds just like him/ her, just deny, deny, deny. |

well, i was actually fired for something i said on here (though it was true). if i'd known then what i know now about korean labour law, i would have counter-sued but i didn't know any better... ah la jeunesse!
the thing is that with the new korean law, if the police go to the moderators and ask for our real names, they must give them. a bunch of people have recently been fined around 10 mil won for things they said about that guy who supported north korea. |

The police would have to go to DAve himself, not the mods. The mods don't even have access to our e-mail addresses on these kinds of sites. |

...you're joking right...
This sounds like absolute nonsense...and a little bit of an irresponsible post....something in the way of scaremongering.
Not getting done on you...but...10 mil won fines...ouch...for posting at Dave's?
Geez...it already seems like pulling are pulling their creative punches on this site, with all this over moderation, but now people should be worrying about lawsuits...things are going to get even more boring around here...
Though...should you have that amazing new Korean law handy...please share the details of it with the rest of us...it sounds like the goose and the golden eggs for the Korean government. |

If you have hard proof (i.e. an original stamped document) showing the nature of the error or corruption then IT MUST BE ANNOUNCED. Foreigners need to know. If we can't support one another here with precisely those kinds of warnings then the relevance of searching Dave's ESL Cafe begins to disintegrate as one can not do any worthwhile research here anymore.
Without that kind of warning system Dave's becomes as useful as opening the Korean phone book and randomly calling schools to see if they'll hire you. You could be calling the Korean mafia for all you know.
BTW Don't work for HUFS the institution is corrupt and will steal your money under fabricated tax claims. The authorities are currently investigating them for possible tax double-filing (fraud.) I have already submitted the necessary scans of relevant documents to the Korean government and the National Tax Service. |
