I noticed whenever I mention "salsa" my students giggle like mad. For example, I did a unit on Mexican food (complete with nachos and salsa for sampling) and the kids would all giggle madly at my utterance of salsa. And then the Backpack 5 book mentions Salsa music. Again, more giggles. I figured it must be a homophone for some dirty Korean word, like how the name Jill sounds like the Korean word for a woman's hoo hoo.
Now Koreans would pronounce salsa with the hard A. However, an english speaker would soften the A. So it's pronounced more like than .
I always meant to get to the bottom of this salsa thing. Yesterday I finally remember to ask my GF. She said is the Korean word for diarrhea.
Of course. |
