Hey again everybody!

My wife bought an Averatec laptop at Yongsan a couple months ago, and it has worked really well until yesterday. She used it at work, and it was fine, but when she got it home she noticed that the cd drive wasn't in My Computer. Then she tried opening it and it wouldn't move. So we opened it with the emergency release thingy, and it would close but windows made no attempt to load a cd. I found that it doesn't show up in the Device Manager, either. I don't know why this could be. Everything else seems to work fine. She did have Game Jack installed on it, which i thought could have done something to it. I dunno. Anyway, anybody have any ideas where it went and how to get it back?

I had the same thing happen to a laptop several years back that was caused by a virus. This was probably 10 years ago and I have to believe that modern anti-virus software would have protected you, but it's worth a shot to look into it. You have all the same symptoms I did...the computer didn't recognize the CD player. As I recall it wasn't destructive, I just had to go through the hassle of cleaning it off the hard drive. Good luck to you.

avg and lavasoft adaware both came back negative. I tried deleting the "other devices" that were in the device manager. Then i restarted the computer. This resulted in it trying to reinstall the devices when it restarted, to no avail, as no drivers are available. I don't know where to get the drivers though, since the Averatec website doesn't have any listed for cd drives. I am going to email them and see what they suggest.

thanks for the suggestion, i'll keep checking the antivirus, but i doubt that's it now. keep them coming guys!

Any recent "virtual drive" software installed...then perhaps uninstalled? I had this happen once....Daemon tools, once uninstalled, took my real cd drive with it. I can't recall what I did to rectify the situation...probably just wiped C: and re-installed.

demophope...

i had GameJack 5 on there, but i don't think any emulated drives were active at the time. I did uninstall it after it started acting up, but would that worsen the problem? Anyway, how did you reinstall windows without a cd drive?

thanks again everybody

Some ideas:
Did you try running the add hardware wizard to see if it would pick it back up?
Did you check the device manager to see if there were any warning icons?
Do you have a restore point you can go back to?
Did you run scandisk on the drive with the o/s, and select the 'automatically fix problems' box?
Got a reg checker/cleaner to chrck problems (like the 'issues' function of ccleaner, for example)?

The CD drive only disappeared in Windows dude...Daemon isn't that good! Come to my house and remove me drive...?!

If you look in your BIOS on boot, you will see the CD-ROM is still there, but it's not registering in Windows for one reason or another.

Did the problem with the software occur at the same time as the drive dissappearing? The problem may be in the BIOS even....seen stranger things happen. Check and see...

Do you have a restore point you can go back to? tried that, did nothing. Averatec support said to run the phoenix backup system that came with it, but it came with a korean os and we installed an english one.

Did you run scandisk on the drive with the o/s, and select the 'automatically fix problems' box? Just tried that, did nothing for me.

Got a reg checker/cleaner to chrck problems (like the 'issues' function of ccleaner, for example)? just did that too, didn't seem to find anything useful.

Demophobe:

I just opened the CMOS setup to see if it could boot from the CD drive and it wasn't there. How do I check the bios? never had to do that before.

thanks again guys, but i'm beginning to think it might be a hardware problem more than a software problem now.

CMOS setup...I will assume you mean the BIOS. You depressed F8 on boot, yes? So, if the CD-ROM isn't in the BIOS, then it's a physical problem. Check the cabling in the case for loose IDE/SATA connectors...short of that. the drive is broken.

I had some message pop up saying my drives weren't detected yesterday, but it went away once I rebooted. Maybe there's a virus going around, but I certainly wasn't able to find one on my system.
