Can anyone recommend any good, cheap hotels in Siem Reap? I'm looking for something in the Old Market area.
Thanks! |

I stayed at the Red Piano, just a block from the Old Market. It was fine. Not luxurious or anything, but clean and nice with a nice bar/lounge area and a good atmosphere. |

I just got back from Cambodia - got a good half price deal at City River Hotel in Siem Reap - on river and close to market area. It was $25 a night for nice room and hotel breakfast included (quite good and substantial - including - DROOL - bacon!).
I paid $25 a night instead of the rack rate of $50. You will want to go to travel agent and see what they have- they will recommend the best deals. If it's more than you want to pay, just ask for something cheaper. You pay them - they remit to the hotel minus their commission. If you walk in the hotel door and register, you won't get this deal.
And I mean a travel agent in CAMBODIA - if you fly into Siem Riep, find one fast. We booked from Phnom Penh (also booked nice hotel in Phnom Penh - phenomenal room with phenomenal view for $40 a night (again including breakfast - the Tonle Sap Hotel)
BTW, you may need a duk duk driver in Siem Reap (depending on whether you are biking or not) to see the Angkor Wat ruins. I recommend MR SENG - you will be met by hordes of duk duk drivers holding up signs. He's a youngish, nice-looking guy and was a really good driver. His sign offers 1000 rial to drive you to your hotel. (They hustle to get you the first day so they get you to book them for the ruins - some will go to 500 rial for the drive.)
The other duk duk drivers we met either didn't know English very well, or they weren't the straight arrows Mr Seng was - if someone tried to overcharge us for so much as a soda, he told us the proper price. We paid him $20 a day and tipped $5 when leaving. And another thng about Mr. Seng - he is ALWAYS right. Everytime I thought I knew where something was (or the name or whatever), he turned out to be right... unlike one dopey guy who hauled us 20 minutes up to the Angkor Hotel when we asked for a 2 minute drive to the Presidential Palace on our last evening.
Have fun -w e had a blast in Cambodia.

Check out the Shadow of Angkor guesthouse. It is in the old market area about 5 or 6 dollars a night in an old French Colonial style building god restaurand and right on the river for what that's worth check out http://www.canbypublications.com/ and then go to the Siem Reap visitors guide they are by far the bet source for all things Cambodia. |

$25/night is pretty expensive for Siem Reap. We stayed in a very nice, clean, Cambodian-run guest house near the old market for $12/night with a/c, private bath, etc. Still can't remember the name...something with the name "sun" in it. |
