I'm buying a 125cc scooter and I'm just wondering what I need to have. Firstly, do I need insurance, a license plate, or a license for that matter (I have a regular driver's license from my home country)? Secondly, where can I go to get this stuff...I live in Sinsa. Thanks! |

You will need basic comp "check-im-bo-hom" insurance for about 100,000 won, a license plate from your Gu-cheon office, and a regular license. You may be able to get by with your home country drivers license for few months+ depending on where you are from. I know you can get drivers licenses from the Kangnam drivers' license office near COEX (look for it on the map outside of the COEX exit). There will be a test involved for the car drivers part. Not sure if you need an additional license admit for the 125cc. I wouldn't sweat that, though. Do get the insurance, at the very least.
And wear a helmet. In several years, I have only been stopped for two reasons: Not having a helmet on (was just driving down the street) and driving on the sidewalk. When they found out I was a forienger, they let me go with warnings. I had neither plates nor insurance at the time. They were so dazzled by my Korean drivers license and super-sorry attitude, that they waved me on. Never even looked for my absent plate.

A few years ago the above advice would have been fine. Last year though, 3 mates of mine got busted for not having insurance or licenses. One guy was in minor accident, not caused by him at all, but because he didn't have the paperwork he had to pay for the whole incident - about 8mil!!
Defitnly the foreigner 'thing' used to get you out of driving hassles with the cops...... but those days seem to be ending.
And yes, for 125cc you need license and insurance.
license - testing station - you take a written test-it's kinda strange so you really do need to read the korean highway code
insurance - take your ownership papers to city hall |

Yes, and no.
You DO NOT need a specific license for driving motorcycles (although for bikes 150cc and bigger you do), but you WILL need your international license or better yet, a standard Korean license. |
