I am so f***ing frustrated right now!. I just want a debit card with a VISA logo that will work online and internationally (for when I want to buy something outside of Korea). Does this exist? If so, at what bank? KEB can't do it for me; neither can Kookmin. This is driving me crazy! Everytime I want to send money home to buy something, i have to do a wire transfer, which ends up costing more due to fees!!!! Please help if you have any information. Thanks.

P.S. I do not want a credit card.

The closest thing to what you're describing is a secured credit card, which you can get from KEB. I know you said you don't want a credit card, but I've never heard of a non credit card with a visa logo.

My Shinhan ATM card is a "VISA interlink" debit card and I have used it in Costco in USA.

Can this card be used internationally as a debit card for purpose of transfering money?

yeah, man. i made an account at shinhan bank and they offered an international debit card without my asking. though i haven't yet tried to use it, i don't really have any doubt it'll work, because the card has some international symbols on it (like cirrus or plus) and the brochure (though in korean) indicates that you can use it overseas. there's a monthly limit along with a per-transaction limit, but you should look into that. and...at most you'll pay 2% (1% for visa, which is unavoidable and possibly 1% for the bank), but it's still a pretty good way to take money out overseas. just ask for two cards when you sign up and send one overseas.

Wire transfers, given the amount of time involved in preparing and the actual sending of the paperwork, are not a money maker for a bank. A direct-withdrawal is more profitable and comes with fewer hassles.

The government took the bank cards that can be used outside the country away because everyone was laundering money with them.

Gord is right. Those nasty English teachers, and whomever else, were making it difficult to track all of the money from illegal work, etc.

Yes, I have an account back home with Bank of America. They gave me a "Check Card" with a Visa logo which I can use anywhere Visa is accepted and the money I spend with it is withdrawn directly from my account back in the states. I have used it online as well as all over the world. I use my Korean bank account to wire money home into my Bank of America account. It works for me.

I got one at an exchange branch of Nonghyup Bank. I have used the card internationally but not at the local stores. Basically you can withdraw money locally and internationally with a limit of $1000 a day. The card has a Maestro and Cirrus logo on it too. Unfortunately it doesn't have a Visa logo.

It's not classified as a debit card as we know it, where we could purchase on it at all local stores in our home countries'.

Nongyhup Bank does however have a check card that is accepted at all local stores and it would take about 7 working days for the card to arrive at your local Nonghyup Bank and a pick up is required with your signature.

I used to bank with KEB, but they no longer issue International debit cards to foreigners.

Last year I got a card from Hana Bank with the Visa logo on it. It also says "International" on the card. However, when I tried to use it a month ago in Seoul, it didn't work. When I asked Hana about it, they basically said, "Of course it didn't work. Yes, it says Visa, but it's not really a credit card. Yes, it says International, but no- you can't use it in other countries."

Thus, my question is for those of you stating that you have international ATM cards or credit cards: When was yours issued? Was it before the law changed last year, or are there still banks issuing credit cards to foreigners?
